Under Suspicion is a US remake of the French thriller The Interrogation (1981) directed by Stephen Hopkins in 2000.
action
The action takes place in Puerto Rico . Renowned lawyer Henry Hearst, 57, found the body of a child and reported it to the police. Captain Benezet is investigating the infanticide, which is the second in 16 days. During a festival, he asks Hearst, with whom he is well known, to come and see him to clear up any inconsistencies in his statement. During this questioning, Hearst becomes increasingly entangled in contradictions and thus arouses suspicion, which is provoked by the sometimes aggressive interrogation technique of Benezet's colleagues.
During the interrogation it turns out that Hearst lives in a field of tension between the failed marriage with his 30 years younger wife Chantal and his affection for young girls. In addition, there are some clues (contact with prostitutes, wearing a toupee, photography as a hobby, unexpected visit to his sister-in-law) that corroborate the suspicion against him. The knowledge that Chantal will be included in the interrogation in the next room puts more pressure on Hearst and when he begins to realize that Chantal also thinks he is the murderer, he starts to make a comprehensive confession, nervously at the end. At that moment, Captain Benezet is informed of the arrest of the real culprit after a third murder that has just been committed. Hearst is released. The final scene shows him and Chantal, stunned by what has happened.
criticism
"Remake of Claude Miller's 'The Interrogation' as a subtle study of psychological terror, which despite flashbacks, parallel action and artificial technical tricks is a chamber play that lives from the two great main actors."
Awards
Under Suspicion was nominated for the 2001 Edgar Allan Poe Award for best film.
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
