The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf blade is simple, 6 to 12 centimeters long, elliptical to elongated elliptical, pointed or pointed, with a broad wedge-shaped or rounded base and a finely ciliated leaf margin. The flowers grow in 10 to 18 centimeters long, narrowly conical, finely hairy and mostly more or less upright panicles . The flowers are lilac purple and have a 1 to 1.5 centimeter long corolla tube with egg-shaped, more or less upright tips. The anthers are slightly above the middle of the corolla tube.

The Hungarian lilac blooms from May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 44.

Systematics

The Hungarian Lilac ( Syringa josikaea ) is a kind of the genus of Lilac ( Syringa ) in the family of Oleaceae (Oleaceae). There she is assigned to the tribe Oleeae. The species was by Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach in 1830 for the first time scientifically valid described . The genus name Syringa was chosen by Linné in 1753, previously from the 16th century the name was used both for the common lilac ( Syringa vulgaris ) and for the European pipe bush ( Philadelphus coronarius ). The name can probably be derived from the Greek "syrigs", a wind instrument that can be made from the branches of the pipe bush. The specific epithet josikaea refers to the noble family "Josika de Branyicska" from Transylvania in the range of the species.
