The Protestant parish church in Christes

The listed Church of Our Lady in Christes in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district ( Thuringia ), a former pilgrimage church, is considered the smallest late Gothic three-aisled basilica in Europe. The parish of Christes and Viernau belongs to the Henneberger Land parish in the Evangelical Church of Central Germany .

History and architecture

Because of the healing Christborn there has been a pilgrimage since 1367. The previous church was smaller and was rebuilt and expanded in 1443. In order to be able to build in galleries , the ship was increased in 1627.

The church consists of a west tower , the nave with three naves, a recessed rectangular choir and an attached sacristy . The building is accessed through an entrance on the ground floor of the tower. A groin vault was drawn into the tower floor . The central nave was probably originally, like the choir today, with a barrel vault made of wood. A flat wooden ceiling can currently be seen in the central nave. Three of the aisle bays have a ribbed vault, one a reticulated vault. The keystone of the central southern yoke shows a depiction of Ecce homo . In the choir, remains of old paintings were uncovered in the 1970s. The building was extensively renovated from 1983 to 1994. During the renovation work, the galleries were removed and the remains of wall paintings from the late 15th century came to light. The paintings show, among other things, depictions of Saints Catherine, Barbara, Dorothea and Ursula. Of the wall paintings that have been preserved , only those in the sacristy have been restored so far.

After 1990 extensive renovation measures were necessary (draining the foundations, combating dry rot , static measures, roof renovation). Furthermore, three bronze bells were purchased instead of the steel bells. The external renovation of the 20 meter high tower began with the removal of the tower hood and the disposal of the steel bells. The financing was realized through grants and donations. On Christmas Eve 2009 the church could be put back into operation.

Furnishing

  • The heavily revised font , like the pulpit, dates from 1572.
  • The old altar plate got a new substructure.
