The Utting was a motor-driven passenger ship on the Ammersee , which ran regular service between the towns on the lake in summer . The ship was built in 1950 and named after the community of Utting am Ammersee .

Since July 2018, it has been under the new name Alte Utting in Munich - Sendling on a bridge and serves as a restaurant, culture and party location.

Ship description

The ship had a total length of 36.4 meters and a width of 7.5 meters. It was approved for the transport of 400 people and had 100 indoor seats. Like the Herrsching , which was commissioned in 1956 , the Utting came from the Deggendorfer Werft and, like the latter, was too top-heavy when it was delivered and had to be balanced with additional ballast in the stern area.

history

Excursion ship MS Utting (1950–2016)

From 1950 onwards, the Utting was used regularly in the summer months as an excursion boat for the Bavarian Sea Shipping Company on the Ammersee. After 66 years of operation, the ship was decommissioned in 2016 and replaced by a new motor ship from the Lux shipyard , which arrived in Stegen in April 2017 for final assembly and was also named Utting in July 2017 .

Use as a party ship (since 2018)

The ship was bought by the Munich cultural association Wannda eV , which had already made a name for itself in the city with other subcultural projects such as the Club Bahnwärter Thiel or the Wannda Circus and was able to finance the ship project with the help of these existing venues. On February 21 and 22, 2017, the hull and superstructures were transported from Lake Ammersee to Munich. There the 144-ton ship was erected on a former railway bridge in Sendling above Lagerhausstraße between the wholesale market hall and the Dreimühlenviertel as a future cultural site, and the expansion and renovation began. The opening of the ship, which was originally planned for May 2017, was delayed by more than a year due to the complex static and safety-related requirements for the project. On July 12, 2018, the ship on the railway bridge was christened Alte Utting by City Councilor Julia Schönfeld-Knor . After completion of the renovation and expansion work, the party ship has been open every day since July 26, 2018, and is mainly used as a bar, restaurant, discotheque (in the engine room), cabaret and event location for concerts. Since the Alte Utting has established itself as an attraction that is known far beyond the city limits, the SPD city council group is striving to maintain the culture and party location in the Sendling district on a permanent basis.

The party ship is repeatedly the subject of local, national and international reporting. The New York Times cited Alte Utting as an example of new “hip” places in Munich's nightlife that could rival Berlin. According to the Süddeutscher Zeitung , the Alte Utting has become “a kind of landmark” for the city of Munich.
