The Bahnwärter Thiel is a techno club and alternative cultural center in the Munich district of Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt .

description

The club is located on the site of the former cattle hall (the cattle yard ) in Munich. It consists of several dozen sea freight containers that originally came from the Port of Hamburg, a former exhibition pavilion from the Lenbachhaus , as well as several U-Bahn railcars from the Munich U-Bahn . Techno club nights take place in Bahnwärter Thiel, as well as raves in the open air and in the subway cars, readings, exhibitions, improvisational theater , concerts and flea markets. The railway attendant Thiel is particularly known for his regular free events such as the raves called the open air platform , for his excellent One Soundsystem and for his avant-garde exterior and interior furnishings, characterized by curious exhibits such as fairground gondolas or ship swings. The spacious outdoor area is characterized by numerous graffiti, campfire pits and seating in a wide variety of variations; inside the club there is a hall-like dance floor with oversized disco ball and spotlight installations as well as several retreat areas with vintage furniture and bizarre decorations. In addition to well-known Munich residents, DJs from clubs such as Berliner Kater Blau or Ritter Butzke play music at Bahnwärter Thiel . The railway attendant Thiel is named after the novel of the same name by Gerhart Hauptmann .

history

The railway attendant Thiel at the old location in 2017

Origins and first locations

Daniel Hahn founded the Bahnwärter-Kulturstätten in 2015 after having founded the Wannda association with his brothers and school friends in 2012 . In the same year, the railway attendant Thiel opened the old location on the cattle yard. In addition to the black club hall, the club also included a separate MAN rail bus from 1952 and numerous curiosities such as giant disco balls, chandeliers, ship swings and mountain gondolas. The rail bus first appeared in November 2015 as part of the alternative Christmas market Märchenbazar in Wannda.

In May 2016, the rail bus for the summer of 2016 was transported to the grounds of the University of Television and Film Munich . In October of the same year, the rail bus was first transported back to the original location of the club, where Daniel Hahn and his colleagues had built a square container castle from 54 shipping containers 40 meters wide and 10 meters high from the port of Hamburg, which included the club hall and the MAN -Bus now surrounded as a huge noise and weather protection. In order to still be able to find the club, Hahn built a construction crane in the container castle from which hung a disco ball that could be seen from afar and was illuminated when the club was in operation.

In May 2017, the rail bus was transported back to the grounds of the University of Television and Film Munich and since then, together with tents and a shipping container, has formed an independent club called Minna Thiel , named after the wife of the protagonist of the novel Bahnwärter Thiel by Gerhart Hauptmann is.

Location at the cattle station

After a five-year contract with the city of Munich was negotiated, the railway attendant Thiel moved to his new permanent location at the cattle yard in autumn 2017. The new location is on the site of the former cattle station , still contains some relics of the old station such as railroad tracks and cattle gates and is only about 400 meters away from the original location of the container castle in the cattle yard. In addition to the usual club nights and concerts, space is also to be created in the freight containers for a cinema, a permanent theater, artist studios, workshops and rehearsal rooms for musicians.

In the spring of 2018, the club was supplemented by a separate underground railcar , which serves as a second floor in the hall during club nights and as a DJ booth at summer raves in the outside area. Two more subway cars of the MVG series B followed in October 2018, with one of the cars being mounted on 4 concrete pillars with a crane. One of the cars is to be used as an artists' canteen, the other as an open workspace. The club hall itself was rebuilt with the sea freight containers as noise protection, but the interior was partially redesigned. A futuristic-looking light installation made of steel halogen lamps was designed for the area of the DJ desk. In May 2019, the club was supplemented by a discarded tram car from Ulm from 1967, which is to function as a youth meeting place and in which art workshops are to take place.

Arson attacks

The new location at the Viehbahnhof sparked a debate about gentrification and open spaces for subculture in Munich, when parts of the local graffiti scene feared being displaced by the club scene and losing the area in the Viehhof, where graffiti spraying is allowed. According to Daniel Hahn, however, the integration of graffiti with the club was intended from the start and the local graffiti scene should be included in the design of the walls and containers. Furthermore, a wooden wall 100 meters in length was built as an additional space for graffiti by the employees of Bahnwärter Thiel, the city of Munich and parts of the graffiti scene. However, graffiti artists mistakenly feared that it was meant to keep sprayers out of the site.

In May 2018 there was an arson attack on the railway attendant Thiel, which led to a wooden shed of the ensemble filled with furniture being burned down. However, a bursting water pipe prevented the fire from spreading to the club building. Because of possible political motives and since a technical defect could be ruled out, the state security started the investigation. Months before, an excavator had burned on the site, and meter-high graffiti with slogans such as "Bahnwärter Thiel attack" adorned the site. In December 2018 there was a third fire in the Thiel railway attendant, in which several caravans and an overseas container burned out, but this time the police determined a technical defect as the cause.

Fur ban

Although the railway attendant Thiel is known for his generally relaxed door policy, since the beginning of February 2020 the club has denied entry to all guests who wear fur clothing or a fur accessory. The announcement of the club made headlines across Germany and led to discussions about the usefulness of the ban. The club justified the ban by stating that items of clothing such as fur collars are absolutely superfluous accessories that have no other function than being a status symbol for those who wear them, and that the animals are only killed for their fur. While the German Animal Welfare Association welcomed the decision, it was viewed critically by the Bavarian Trade Association . The animal welfare organization PETA distinguished the railway attendant Thiel for the ban as a “hero for animals” and expressed the hope that “more and more club owners would follow this positive example”.

Future development

The lease that has been signed for the train attendant Thiel on the Viehhof premises ends in 2022. The redevelopment of parts of the Viehhof has already begun with the construction of the new Munich Volkstheater , which is to be completed by 2021. The construction of a new residential area on parts of the site is also planned.

Reception and awards

The railway attendant Thiel is repeatedly the subject of national and international reports. The renowned daily newspaper The New York Times cited railway attendant Thiel as an example of new hip places in Munich's nightlife that could compete with Berlin. At the Munich Nightlife Awards 2016 the club won 3rd place in the Techno, House, Electro category and 1st place in the Ambience / Equipment category at the Munich Nightlife Awards 2017 .

Associated projects

Since 2018, the crew of Bahnwärter Thiel has also been operating the party ship Alte Utting , a former passenger ship from the Ammersee , just a few hundred meters from the club's location , which is located on a disused railway bridge in the Sendling district and primarily as a restaurant, bar, cabaret and event location for Music concerts is used.
