Fabig helped KEV to move into the Bundesliga as team captain in 1991 . Due to his tough and physical style of play, he gained great popularity with the fans. His commitment to ice hockey in Krefeld , during and after his career, made him inducted into the Krefeld Hall of Fame in 2014.

Career

Early years

Uwe Fabig grew up in Krefeld. Through his grandfather he got into ice hockey very early and started playing himself at the age of seven. In his early years he never turned out to be one of the best, but was able to prove his skills when he was 15. Since Fabig never expected to get into professional sport, he trained as a locksmith and technical draftsman in addition to the sport. Despite the double burden, he seized the chance to play in the second division under Tore Hedwall in 1981 and retrained to become a glazier in his mid-twenties.

Time as a professional athlete (1981–1995)

He played the first two seasons in the 2nd division in the usual Rheinlandhalle . Due to his good start and his distinctive style of play, other teams quickly noticed him and so he was brought to Kassel for the 1983/84 season. There he gave up his status as a trainee at the same time and started his own business as a master glazier in 1994. After his return he was gradually trained by his then captain Vic Stanfield to be his successor. Under his leadership, the KEV was promoted to the first division after eleven years of being in second class. After this success, he stayed with his team for another year and then said goodbye to the Krefeld ice cream. At the end of his career, he played another year in Grefrath before he hung up his skates prematurely due to an injury.

His influence on ice hockey in Krefeld after the end of his career

However, he has remained loyal to the sport ever since. In 2003 he and a few other ex-professionals resurrected the old men’s team Sieburg Oilers , which had previously almost been dissolved . In the following years, the team gained more and more attention and growth. The old name was dropped in 2004 and the Big Old Boys were entered in the registers as an independent association. As the first BOB event, the Lothar Kremershof Cup will be a huge success. From now on, the tournament in memory of the former captain will be a regular highlight.

Fabig's great commitment was also evident in the planning for the 75th and 80th anniversary of ice hockey in Krefeld.

Due to his great influence on ice hockey in Krefeld, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014. Since then, his jersey has been hanging under the roof of the Yayla Arena . To celebrate more than 80 years of ice sports tradition in Krefeld, the Krefeld Pinguine founded the Alumni Club in 2019 and appointed Uwe Fabig as President.

Play style

Fabig is known for his tough and physical style of play. Because of his many penalty minutes , he earned the name "penalty box king" among the fans. Thanks to his ability as captain to hold the team together and build it up, he owes the title of "honorary captain" that Uli Urban bestowed on him.
