Völlenerfehn is a village in the municipality of Westoverledingen , in the district of Leer , with around 3800 inhabitants and is part of the municipality of Völlen . Völlenerfehn is limited to the east of Völlenerkönigsfehn , west of Völlen, and the railway line between Leer and Papenburg , south of Papenburg and north of Steenfelderfeld .

Völlenerfehn is thus a place in East Friesland , which is directly on the "border" to the Emsland . Despite its name, Völlenerfehn is not a classic Fehn settlement, just like the much younger Völlenerkönigsfehn . The place was mentioned as "Vollingerfheen by der Papenborg" as early as 1518 in the register of the Leerort office. This means that the name comes from the time before the fen settlement, the part of the name -fehn in this case simply indicates a moor area.

history

Völlenerfehn was founded by settlers who u. a. came from Völlen . Völlenerkönigsfehn was built after Völlenerfehn around 1830. The village used to consist of several districts: Vollinger - Fehn, Fehntjer Gaste, Grode-Gatt and Haferbält. Already around 1300 he gave the first mention of the old districts. The administration did not change until 1700 the districts were merged to Völlenerfehn. In order to educate the population, the first school was built in 1787; it was renewed in 1822.

The railway also came to the place, in 1854 he came to the construction of the railway line ( Emsland line ) between Leer and Papenburg (line Emden-Papenburg (Ems)), the line was extended to Rheine in 1856 (Westbahn).

Curiosities

A special feature was the windmill built around 1813, which was an earth or Wall Dutch windmill . The mill was licensed as a grinding, pelt and oil mill. But in 1950 the wings broke off. This was in 1954 by the new owners, millers and millwrights BA Goldstein (1912-96) under the direction of mill builder Wurps from Riepe , but an abandoned, octagonal water pumping mill from the Riepster Hammrich placed so that it is actually two stacked mills acted . This sucked. Bastard-Mühle was sold and dismantled by the Küppers family in December 2009. Only the lower part of the mill remained, which was torn down in 2010/11.
