The VEB Application Center Electronics Berlin (AEB) was a state-owned company of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) with around 350 employees, which was based in Berlin-Friedrichshain until it was dissolved in August 1990 .

Origin and main tasks

With the formation of the VEB Kombinat Mikroelektronik Erfurt (KME), the VEB AEB emerged from VEB Elektronikhandel (founded in 1966) and the two associated companies, Central Application Control Center (founded in 1966) and the Institute for Electronic Components (founded in 1971) in 1978 . The basis was the order 39/78 of the Ministry of Electrical Engineering and Electronics . The main pillars of the company were:

  • Import of active electronic components from both economic blocks for the R&D needs of the user industry in the GDR
  • Central information and documentation center within the combine and publication of component information,
Example of a data book with the electronic components available in the GDR, 1989
  • Annual elaboration of the strategic development of a range of electronic components coordinated with the user industry for production in companies owned by the combine and import from the COMECON
  • Engineering office for the application of microelectronics (IfAM) to support the non-electrotechnical / electronic industry with the introduction of microelectronics in Berlin and long-term tests of devices with the latest electronic components.

The passive electronic components not belonging to the KME range were processed in a similar institution of the VEB Kombinat Electronic Components Teltow "Carl von Ossietzky" (KEBT) also in the former Friedrichshain district in Schreinerstraße.

Locations

The main location of the company was the headquarters of the company director, the party and company union leadership, the specialist director for science and research and the specialist directorate for management development. These areas of responsibility were located in developed former residential buildings at Mainzer Straße  25. The focus of the settlement of the various areas (also known as directorates) was in the Berlin-Friedrichshain district , there were further operational areas in the district and in the Köpenick district . Due to the steady growth of operational tasks, new locations were added up to the 1980s, while other smaller ones were given up. In 1990 there were the following work areas at the following locations:

Company structure and personnel

The company is structured as follows:

  • Operations director: Horst Grüber (until July 1982), Jochen Dunkel (until 1983) and Heinrich Heise (until 1990)
  • Technical Director Science and Research until 1984 also Application: Klaus Riediger (until 1984), Karl-Heinz Arnold (until 1988), Gerd Krybus (1989 to 1990)
    • Strategy department: Karl-Heinz Arnold (until 1984), Manfred Sternagel (until 1985), Roland Krause (until 1990)
The task consisted of annually updating the demands of the user industry on the basic direction of the development of the range of active electronic components with a five-year focus and the proposal to solve this requirement through development and production in the combine, import from the RGW , or in exceptional cases with negative certificate import from other regions (perspective component range). Other tasks included support with studies and management-appropriate documents with requirements for the semiconductor industry, creation of component comparison lists, profitability calculations for electronic product groups.
    • Planning department: Elfriede Stoye
    • International Cooperation Department: Günter Peters
    • Patent Law Department: Carl Holzweißig
    • Standardization department: Peter Handrack
    • Department of special components LVO to the department of strategy: Viktor Böhm until 1988
    • Reliability department
  • Technical Director Information and Documentation: Winfried Wildt
    • Library department: Ursula Piesker
    • Thesaurus / Research Department: Wolfgang Wotschke
    • Scientific and technical information department: Gerhard Stürmer (until 1989), Brigitte Mann (until 1990)

    • Special Components Department LVO: Heinz Schock
    • Commercial application microelectronics department: Michael Rössel
    • Building elements pricing department: Ernst Kretschmar
  • Technical Director Application (until 1984): Klaus Riediger
  • Director of Engineering Companies for the Application of Microelectronics (IfAM) (from its founding in 1985 to its dissolution in 1990): Gerd Krybus (from 1989 in personal union with the specialist directorate for science and research)
The directorate was responsible for the development and expansion of engineering companies of the same name in all 15 districts of the GDR responsible for their constant coordination. The task of the IfAM was to support the non-electrotechnical / electronic industry of the GDR, as well as territorially managed, small and medium-sized companies in the broad introduction of microelectronics through the development and use of user-specific hardware and software solutions in business processes.
    • IfAM's support and coordination department: Klaus Riediger
IfAM's tasks changed in the direction of greater use of microelectronic solutions, so that in 1988 these institutions were renamed as Microelectronics Advice and Information Centers (BIS).
    • Hardware development department: Werner Kratzsch
    • Software development department: Karl-Heinz Gesellensetter (from 1986 department head IfAM - hardware / software development, Scharnweberstraße)

After 1990

In autumn 1990 some areas of the former AEB tried to survive as spin-offs with new or updated tasks:

  • Electronics trade center,
  • Application + Market publishing house
  • Representation for the company Sanyo
  • Representation for the company Minolta
  • PohLoh-Datasoft GmbH for data information and software;
Closure through capital withdrawal by the holding PTC-electronic .
  • Prodacon GmbH, successor to the hardware / software / workshop department in Scharnweberstrasse. In
1992 the company was closed due to capital withdrawal by the Application Center Elektronik Berlin GmbH i. L.

Of the companies mentioned, only the trade center and the Sanyo agency were successful for several years.
