The Seglerhaus am Wannsee Association (VSaW) is a Berlin sailing club on the Wannsee . The traditional club is the second oldest sailing club in Germany.

history

The old club house

The association was founded on October 6th, 1867 by 14 members with 8 boats under the leadership of Captain Markgraf as the "Society of the United Sailors of the Lower Havel ". It is the second oldest German sailing club after the RHE sailing club, which was founded in Königsberg . With the founding of the Alsen Colony in the south-west of Berlin, later to become Wannsee, many of his yachts anchored in the large bay of the Wannsee.

In 1881 a 2600 m² water property was acquired in the colony and the first club house was built, which still exists and, after various extensions and renovations, is now a listed building and is used as a shipyard and youth center. With the acquisition of the property, the “Society of the United Sailors of the Unterhavel” dissolved and a new company called “Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee” - VSaW for short - was founded.

As the club grew and even Crown Prince Wilhelm sailed on the Havel and Wannsee with his special class yacht Angela , the new, larger clubhouse was opened in 1910, which, like Cecilienhof Palace , had been built in the rural British Tudor style. It is still the center of a varied sporting, sociable and cultural club life. This house, together with its 10,000 m² water site and sports facilities, is one of the most beautiful clubhouses in Europe. A large assembly and ballroom in the style of the dining room of a luxury steamer at the time (unchanged since its construction), a cozy and stylish bar room, a divisible restaurant area with a beautiful view of the Wannsee and a large terrace, which is widely appreciated, characterize the building.

activities

With around 1000 members, the VSaW is one of the large clubs in the German Sailing Association . The youth department has well over 100 sailors in its ranks.

According to the statutes, the purpose of the association is to promote water sports, in particular racing sailing, as well as training young members to become racing sailors. For the youngsters, there is training for Optimist beginners, Optimist B, Optimist A, Laser Standard, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7 and 420 dinghies .

successes

Even before the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the yachts of the VSaW sailed victories in international and national competitions. In the special class initiated by Kaiser Wilhelm II around 1900 , Otto Protzen won the Kiel Week six times and in 1907 the Kaiser Wilhelm Cup in the German-American country rematch in Kiel with the yacht Wannsee VII designed by Max Oertz . Like many other important prizes, the Kaiser Wilhelm Cup donated and presented by Wilhelm II can still be admired in the VSaW clubhouse to this day.

At the Olympic sailing competitions off Kiel in 1936 , the team Peter Bischoff / Jochen Weise won the first ever Olympic gold medal in sailing for Germany in the star boat . From 1936 until today, VSaW sailors have taken part in all Olympic sailing competitions. At the Olympic sailing competitions in 1964 , Willi Kuhweide won the second Olympic gold medal, this time in the Finn dinghy boat class . His wooden Finn Darling is exhibited today in the German Maritime Museum.

In addition, members of the VSaW have won numerous victories at world and European championships as well as national and international regattas.

The VSaW has long been one of the four German yacht clubs involved in organizing the Kiel Week . In accordance with its size and history, members of the VSaW are involved in the design of sailing in national and international organizations. For example, he repeatedly appointed chairmen of the German Sailing Association such as Wilhelm Rakenius (1928–1932), Kurt Pochhammer (1973–1985) and Rolf Bähr (2005–2013).

Every year more than ten major regattas are held on the waters of Wannsee and Unterhavel, including at least one international German championship with the participation of the world's best sailors.

In addition to racing sailing, cruising sailing is not neglected either: a number of club members have their yachts in the ports of the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean, and every season numerous teams set out on sea trips from their home town of Wannsee.
