The Volkswagen W12 Coupé (also known as Volkswagen Nardò , based on the Nardò Ring test track near the Italian town of Nardò ) was a concept car that was developed by Volkswagen from 1997 onwards .

Initial concept

At the request of Ferdinand Piëch , then Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group, Giorgio Giugiaro and his Italdesign team were commissioned to design a Volkswagen sports car, with instructions to accommodate a 12-cylinder engine in a W configuration .

One reason for the conception was to prove to the world that the Volkswagen Group can build a super sports car and a large and reliable engine for its luxury and sports cars.

In fact, the W12 engine of the Volkswagen W12 of the same name is closely related to the twelve-cylinder engines of the Volkswagen Phaeton , the Volkswagen Touareg , the Audi A8 , the Bentley Continental GT , the Bentley Continental GTC , the Bentley Flying Spur and the Bentley Bentayga . The engine of the W12 is also an ancestor of the W8 engine of the Volkswagen Passat W8 and the W16 engine of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 .

Development history

In 1997, at the Tokyo Motor Show , Volkswagen presented its first vehicle concept with a W12 engine, the W12 Syncro (also known as the W12 Syncro Coupé), a bright yellow coupé with a 5.6 liter W12 engine developing 309 kW (420 hp) ) and Syncro all-wheel drive.

In 1998, the W12 Roadster was presented at the Geneva Motor Show , a red roadster based on the W12 Syncro presented the previous year, but with rear-wheel drive .

In 2001, at the Tokyo Motor Show, Volkswagen presented the W12 Nardo , an orange-colored coupé with a W12 mid-engine that now had a displacement of 6.0 liters.

From 2001 onwards, a W12 Nardo Coupé with a matt black carbon body and a W12 engine with 440 kW (600 hp) of power took off on record runs on the high-speed track in Nardò.

The end of the W12 Coupé

The super sports car from VW never came into the dealerships, only into the museum. The dream of a Volkswagen super sports car was given up in 2003 in favor of the Group's own competition ( Lamborghini Murciélago since 2001 , Bentley Continental GT from 2003, Bugatti Veyron 16.4 from 2005 and Audi R8 from 2006 ).

Motorsport

On February 23, 2001 a Volkswagen W12 Coupé set the world record for all speed classes over the Nardò-Ring in Lecce over 24 hours and covered a distance of just over 7740 kilometers at an average speed of 322 km / h.

Appearances in video games

The first appearance of the W12 took place in the Gran Turismo Concept 2002 in Tokyo-Geneva. Since then he has appeared in the GT series without exception.

The W12 also appears in Test Drive: Unlimited and World Racing 2.

In addition, the W12 also appears in Asphalt 8 .
