Valērijs Šabala (born October 12, 1994 in Riga ) is a Latvian football player . Šabala has been a Latvian national player since 2013 and holds the record as the youngest scorer in the senior national team.

Career

society

Šabala was trained in the youth of FK Rīgas Futbola skola , when the professional team rose to the first Latvian league in 2008, he was taken up by then coach Vladimir Beļajevs for the following season in 2009 in the first squad. Already at the age of 15, Šabala made his debut against reigning champions FK Ventspils on October 15, 2009 when he was substituted on in the 46th minute (the game was lost 8-0). He came to another brief assignment three days later against FC Tranzit . After the relegation of his team, he moved to JFK Olimps in January 2010 , who were newly promoted to the first Latvian league. Šabala scored his first professional goal against Skonto Riga . He was old at that time 15 years and 193 days, this made him at the time to the youngest scorer in the history of the first Latvian league and all European first leagues until this record on June 10, 2014. compatriot Janis Grīnbergs was broken . During his entire time at JFK Olimps, Šabala came to 21 missions, in which he scored six goals, despite his then still relatively young age.

His talent did not go unnoticed by bigger clubs, so the Latvian record champions Skonto signed Riga Šabala in February 2011. During his first season he did not get beyond the status of a substitute and scored two goals in 22 games, one of them against his old club JFK Olimps . Despite the fact that he came to little game practice, Šabala was named "Young Player of the Year" by receiving the Ilmārs Liepiņš Award. Although there was interest from English and Italian well-known clubs such as Arsenal London , Watford FC or Udinese Calcio , there was no change.

He scored his first hat trick at the age of just 17 on June 30, 2012 in a league game against FK Metta . Because of his good performance, Šabala was awarded the title of "Best Player in the Latvian Premier League" on July 10, 2012. He also received the Ilmārs Liepiņš Award for the best young player for a second time.

In 2014, the Belgian representative FC Bruges secured his services. The club awarded him a few times to at best mediocre clubs from all over Europe, at Club Bruges, however, Šabala did not play a competitive game. Finally, in August 2017, he moved permanently to the Polish second division club Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała , where he was regularly used.

Since July 1, 2019, he has been under contract with Miedź Legnica again .

National team

Šabala went through the U-Juniors of Latvia and was called up for the first time for the A-selection in 2013, where he made his debut against Qatar on May 24, 2013 . In his next game, he scored twice in a friendly against Turkey , making him the youngest ever goalscorer for the Latvian first national team. Due to this fact, he was able to increase his level of awareness a little outside of Latvia.

In the course of qualifying for the European Championship 2016 , Šabala met again against Turkey, in the 91st minute he scored the 1-1 equalizer, securing his team a point. In the following years he was able to establish himself as a permanent fixture in the national team.
