Valeriu Traian Frențiu
Valeriu Traian Frențiu (born August 25, 1875 in Reșița , Austria-Hungary , † July 11, 1952 in Sighet , Romania ) was Bishop of Oradea Mare (Großwardein) of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church .
Life
Valeriu Traian Frențiu, the son of priest Joachim Frențiu and his wife Rozalia, attended elementary school in his hometown and high school. He studied theology in Budapest and was ordained a priest on September 28, 1898 . He received his doctorate in theology in 1902. From 1904 to 1912 he was a pastor in the community.
On December 14, 1912 he was appointed Bishop of Lugoj , he was consecrated on January 14, 1913. He devoted himself to the formation of priests and established a seminary in Lugoj . On February 25, 1922 he was appointed Bishop of Oradea Mare.
After the death of Archbishop Alexandru Nicolescu in 1941 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia . In 1947 he returned to his diocese Oradea Mare.
He was arrested on October 28, 1948 and interned in the Dragoslavele camp, and in February 1949 he was given solitary confinement in the Căldărușani monastery . In 1950 he was sent to Sighet Prison , where he died on July 11, 1952 of starvation and malnutrition. That night he was buried without a coffin in a mass grave in the cemetery of the poor.
Beatification process
The beatification procedure was initiated for Valeriu Traian Frențiu . In the course of this, on March 19, 2019 , Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Frențius and six other bishops who had perished in the communist persecution of the Church as a prerequisite for beatification. The Pope himself beatified him on June 2, 2019 in Blaj .
