Vanilla hartii is a plant from the genus vanilla ( Vanilla ) in the family of orchid (Orchidaceae). The climbing plant occurs in Central and South America.

description

Vanilla hartii is an evergreen climber with a thin shoot. The internodes are 8 to 11 inches long and curved. The leaves are oblong-oval, drawn out at the front and pointed to a point, their texture is only slightly thickened. The leaf length is 5 to 8 centimeters with a width of 1.6 to 1.8 centimeters, the petiole is 0.3 to 0.8 centimeters long.

The racemose inflorescence is 0.6 to 1.2 inches long and has only a few greenish-white, unpleasant smelling flowers . The bracts are broad-oval, concave, they end pointed and measure 2 to 2.5 millimeters in length. The flower stalk and ovary measure together 1.6 to 2 centimeters, the ovary has a sepal-like widening at the tip. The petals are elongated to lanceolate with a length of 3.7 to 3.8 centimeters. The inner petals are slightly narrower than the sepals . The lip becomes 3.3 centimeters long, at the base it is fused with the sides over the entire length of the column . The front free part is not lobed and wavy at the edge. Five longitudinal veins on the lip are highlighted. In the center of the lip are five hairy scales pointing backwards. The slightly club-shaped column becomes 3 centimeters long, on the underside it is hairy. The capsule fruit becomes 5 to 7 centimeters long and 3 to 3.5 millimeters in diameter.

distribution

Vanilla hartii is distributed from southern Mexico across Central America and northern South America. Portères understands by Vanilla hartii only the plants occurring in Trinidad and Tobago and assigns the South American populations to the species Vanilla leprieurii , which is, however, regarded as a synonym for Vanilla hartii . It occurs in moist, evergreen forests.

Systematics and botanical history

This orchid was described by Rolfe in 1899 and named after the British botanist John Hinchley Hart (1847–1911).

Within the genus Vanilla , Vanilla hartii is classified in the sub-genus Xanata and there in the section Xanata , which only contains species of the Neotropics . In addition to Vanilla leprieurii , Portères names the species Vanilla sprucei as a close relative. After Soto Arenas and Cribb bezitzt Vanilla hartii vegetative similarity to Vanilla bicolor , while the flowers with Vanilla planifolia can be confused. However, it is not closely related to these two species, but to Vanilla espondae , Vanilla sprucei and Vanilla trigonocarpa .
