history

Veenoord was founded around 1859. The place name refers to the typical moor landscape for the province of Drente ( Veen = Fenn ). Unlike many of the surrounding villages, Veenord was not founded by peat cutters , but was created as a workers' settlement during the construction of the Hoogeveense Vaart canal .

The peat industry settled mainly in neighboring Nieuw-Amsterdam and helped the area to flourish. In the course of time, Veenoord and Nieuw-Amsterdam grew closer and closer together, both spatially and economically, which ultimately earned the towns the nickname twin village.

During the Second World War , 41 Jewish residents from Veenoord and Nieuw-Amsterdam were murdered. In 2012, a total of 12 stumbling blocks were laid in both villages to commemorate her .

The Van Gogh Huis is located directly on the border between Veenoord and Nieuw-Amsterdam . The painter Vincent van Gogh lived in this house, which is still used as an inn today, between October and December 1883 . Its accommodation at the time is open to the public as a museum.

The Nooitgedacht windmill is located on the Hoogeveense Vaart canal . The mill was built in 1861 as Veenoord's first village mill and is accessible as a museum. The windmill was extensively renovated in 2004 and 2005.
