Venice - as if we had dreamed is an experimental documentary by Wolfgang Ettlich and Hans Albrecht Lusznat from 2000 . It is still the longest exclusively with Steadicam turned film throughout its history in a setting tells.

action

It's seven in the morning - Venice is getting ready for the day. The camera glides over the dark water, the yellow light of the sunrise breaks in the waves. A transport boat drives the camera between the Giudecca and the Zattere into the still untouched city. On an early morning walk, the camera guides us through the Dorsoduro district . Students, workers and small business people live here: the Venetians. As if on a walk, the camera captures people's everyday life, far away from the crowds of tourists. These are the most beautiful hours of the day when Venice belongs to the Venetians: the street sweeper, the cheese merchant, the shoemaker, the old wine merchant, the transporter, the bar owner ... The camera shows the everyday face of Venice for 118 minutes without interruption: coincidentally and yet determined by what has always made life here. The film is a glide over bridges, past canals and through alleys, from which squares open up to then dive back into the narrow and labyrinth of the city. Along this visually intoxicating steadicam ride, the camera repeatedly encounters people - in the style of cinema directe - who are at home in Venice and give us a personal insight into their lives.

Production and Background

The film was shot on June 7, 2000, almost in real time between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. A Sony digital betacam DVW790 camera recorder was used as the camera . The runtime of the cassettes was only 40 minutes, so that two changes were necessary, which are hidden in the picture in a drive over a wall. The two cassette changes are almost invisible thanks to a wiper panel each . The recordings were only interrupted for about two minutes when the cassette was changed. The preparation time was over a week; the walk was rehearsed without a camera on several days at the appropriate time. Venice - As if we had a dream is probably the only film that was printed in a film festival catalog before a single meter was shot for it. The post-processing of picture and sound took place within a week, then the video material for the theatrical version was transferred to 35 mm film and provided with subtitles . The film was shown for the first time at the Munich Film Festival on June 24, 2000 in the Arri cinema .

Reviews

“Venice is a mysterious city, a city that has inspired many artists. Thomas Mann memorialized her with 'Death in Venice', Daphne du Maurier with 'When the gondolas bear mourning'. The city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. In 'Venice - As if we had dreamed ...' ... you can experience the people of the lagoon city in the morning, everyday life and what happens away from the tourist crowds. The viewer becomes a filmmaker who walks through Venice himself. "

“A delightful documentary that introduces the everyday face of a 'dream city' and invites you to explore and enjoy. It was shot with Steadycam in almost one single take and exudes a lot of calm and serenity; All the more annoying are the overly simple questions that the authors ask the residents from the off. "
