The Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Rhineland-Palatinate is a department of the Ministry of the Interior there and therefore not an independent authority as in other federal states such as Bavaria or Saxony . The head office is located in the Bassenheimer Hof complex in Mainz . He uses intelligence resources for his tasks .

Department 6 of the Interior Ministry is responsible for the protection of the constitution. It is divided into the following sections:

The state office hit the headlines in 1993 because of its undercover agent Klaus Steinmetz . Steinmetz, who was active in the left-wing scene in Mainz, came into contact with the command level of the Red Army Fraction (RAF) in the early 1990s , first with Birgit Hogefeld and then with Wolfgang Grams , which gave state security authorities direct access to the operational level of the RAF for the first time made possible. It was decided to arrest Hogefeld at a meeting with Steinmetz in June 1993, which was carried out in a large-scale police operation at the Bad Kleinen train station on June 27, 1993 (see GSG-9 mission in Bad Kleinen ). This led to the arrest of Hogefeld, but also to the death of Grams, who was also present, and the GSG-9 official Michael Newrzella in a subsequent exchange of fire. The Interior Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Walter Zuber , planned to continue using the V-Mann Steinmetz, which is why his presence at the place of access was concealed from the public until it was exposed three weeks later, although the media reported a third person present as V on the following day without naming his name -Mann reported. This attempt at secrecy was a major reason for the subsequent political affair about the unsuccessful deployment of Bad Kleinen, which has been referred to as a state crisis. The journalist Andreas Förster sees the failure of the constitution protection authorities in particular as a root of the later right-wing extremist terror of the NSU .
