occupation

Retribution in Catano (original title: Tierra de fuego ) is a Spanish-German western film from 1965, directed by Jaime Jesús Balcázar . The work, also shown as the Land of Fire , was premiered in German on October 1, 1965.

action

Abel Dragna comes to Catano with his gang and finds his old buddy Jess Kinley in the Sheriff. In the following days the gangsters try out how far they can go with their terror against the residents. Since Jess does not intervene, they become more brutal and kill a citizen in supposed self-defense. The still inactive sheriff is now seen by the rest of the residents as a pathetic coward; only the stable master's daughter, Anna-Lisa Schmidt, still believes in him. There is brief relief when the gang leaves town - but soon they return with sacks of gold stolen in neighboring towns. Now Jess decides to face the gangsters and thus his past and at the same time to prove to Catano that he is not a coward. When even Anna-Lisa is injured in a robbery, the population under Jess' leadership can defend themselves against the bandits and kill Dragna and his people.

criticism

That is a “tough Euro-Western according to common clichés, without any psychological deepening”, writes the lexicon of international films ; Sandra Brennan describes it in "Rovi" as "melodramatic". Joe Hembus notes that director and lead actor Stevens is "deeply in love with the delights of destruction."

Remarks

Balcázar is not named as the director in the German version of the film, but as the sole director in the Spanish version.
