description

The various-leaved cress is a biennial to perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 90 cm and consists of several ascending stems , which are often branched at the base. The basal leaves are lyre-shaped and pinnate and encompass the stem. The stem, like the flower stalks, is covered with protruding hairs.

The four-fold flower has a diameter of 3 to 3.5 mm. The four white petals are about half longer than the sepals . The six anthers are red-purple.

The elliptical to egg-shaped pods are about 3 mm wide, about 5 to 7 mm long and smooth; above they are winged pulp. The free stylus part is longer than 1 mm and clearly protrudes beyond the edge of the wing.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 16.

use

The seeds of the wild cress species were previously used as a pepper substitute because of their pungent taste.
