List of grape varieties

'Vertzami' is the name of a Greek red wine variety that only plays a subordinate role in terms of acreage (491 hectares, as of 1999), but is one of the country's up-and-coming vines in terms of quality.

Descent, origin, distribution

Presumably there is a relationship with the Italian variety ' Marzemino '. It is identical to the Lefkas variety on Cyprus.

On the Ionian islands , 'Vertzami' is still cultivated to a small extent in the western Peloponnese and western central Greece, where it is used almost exclusively as dye grapes . It was introduced in Crete in 1930, but could not establish itself there.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The young leaves are only slightly woolly hairy and spotted bronze (anthocyanin spots).
  • The large leaves are almost rounded, mostly wholly or slightly three-lobed. The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are large compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface is blistered and coarse.
  • The conical to cylindrical grape is shouldered, medium to large and dense. The round to oval berries are medium-sized and dark blue to purple-blue in color. The berry skin is thick-skinned. The juicy berries have an astringent character.

The 'Vertzami' grape variety is very vigorous and high-yielding.

Maturity: approx. 25 days after the ' Gutedel ' - ripening late.

Wine

Wines from the Vertzami are usually only mashed for a relatively short time , as the extraction of color and aroma has already reached its peak after about 48 hours. The red wine is very dark in color, rich in berry, laurel and cinnamon aromas. The tannin body is moderate and it has a good acid structure and is mostly alcoholic.

So far, only products from a winery in Patras have entered international trade . This 'Vertzami' is a blend of 60% 'Vertzami' and 40% ' Cabernet Franc '.

properties

The vine is robust, quite productive and less susceptible to most vine diseases except for downy mildew . It needs barren, calcareous soils and does not tolerate a lack of water.
