Vesna Girardi-Jurkić

Vesna Girardi-Jurkić (born January 15, 1944 in Zagreb , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; † August 25, 2012 in Pula , Croatia ) was a Croatian politician ( HDZ ), minister of culture and archaeologist . She was the first female minister in a Croatian cabinet.

Profession and Politics

Girardi-Jurkić was an archaeologist and museologist at the Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula. In April 1992 she was appointed Minister for Education, Culture and Sport. Girardi-Jurkić held the office until October 1994 in the cabinets of Prime Ministers Franjo Gregurić , Hrvoje Šarinić and Nikica Valentić . She was the first woman to be appointed minister in a Croatian cabinet since the country's independence.

Girardi-Jurkić was then the permanent representative of Croatia to UNESCO in Paris from November 1994 to December 2000 . She made great contributions in the designation of the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč , the Cathedral of St. Jacob in Šibenik and the Old Town of Trogir as World Heritage Sites .

Girardi-Jurkić's scientific works, conference reports, museum and travel guides have been translated into several languages, including German, English and Italian.

Girardi-Jurkić was made an honorary citizen of several cities.
