Vicente Mejía Colindres

Vicente Mejía Colindres (* 1878 in La Esperanza, Intibucá Department ; † August 24, 1966 in Tegucigalpa ) was President of Honduras from September 16 to October 5, 1919 and from February 1, 1929 to February 1, 1933 .

Life

Vicente Mejía Colindres was a doctor , surgeon, storyteller and politician, he was a member of the Partido Liberal de Honduras .

On October 5, 1913, he lived in the Municipio Minas de Oro , leased land from the municipality and wrote an open letter for the Cabildo Abierto to Woodrow Wilson .

He married Chinda de Mejía, who was active in the Liga Antialcohólica de Mujeres .

Mejía was a member of parliament, governor, minister of education and minister of the interior (1909-1911)

In 1919 an uprising against the government of Francisco Bertrand led to his resignation.

On September 9, 1919, Bertrand gave up his presidency to his cabinet and left Honduras via Amapala on the steamer USS San José for the USA. His government cabinet consisted of:

  • Government Minister: Salvador Aguirre
  • Foreign Minister: Jesús Bendaña
  • Finance Minister: Leopoldo Córdova
  • Minister of War: Santiago Meza Cálix
  • Home Justice Secretary: Federico Smith Vanegas
  • Minister for Development, Public Works, Agriculture: Hector Valenzuela

On September 16, 1919, these ministers resigned and a new government cabinet was formed:

  • Government Minister: Vicente Mejía Colindres
  • Foreign Minister: Jesús M. Alvarado
  • Finance Minister Antonio Bermúdez
  • Remigio Díaz Zelaya, Santiago Meza Cálix and Vicente Tosta Carrasco .
  • US Ambassador Thomas Sambola Jones.

This government cabinet called on Alberto Membreño, who was in Guatemala, to take over the presidency, which the latter refused for health reasons. The first deputy, Nazario Soriano, was also abroad. Therefore, the second deputy, Francisco Bográn , became president on October 5, 1919.

Vicente Mejía Colindres was foreign minister in the government cabinet of Francisco Bográn (1919–1921).

Tiburcio Carías Andino , his opponent in the presidential elections in October 1928 received 47,498 votes, Vicente Mejía Colindres received 62,222 votes.

Presidency

During his presidency, the legislature and the judiciary were dominated by the representatives of the Partido Nacional de Honduras of Tiburcio Carías Andino , who systematically boycotted his executive branch so that cohabitation was not possible.

The parliament reformed the Ley de Inmigración of 1906 with a new immigration law of April 2, 1929. On March 19, 1930, the Decree 143/1930 in Article 11 required migrants to join Arab, Chinese, Turkish, Syrian, Armenian, Palestinian or belonged to the black race and from people called Colìes , proof of cash of 5,000 pesos, of which 500 pesos had to be deposited.

His presidency was shaped by the effects of the Great Depression , which made export-oriented Honduras a victim of the global economic crisis .

  • Government Minister, Minister of Justice Administration and Minister of Health: Vicente Tosta Carrasco

United Fruit Company

In parliament, a reform of the Canon de Aguas , water rights and whether the banana plantations should pay a fee for the extraction of water was discussed. In April 1931, Generals Román Díaz Argueta and Gregorio Ferrera attacked barracks on the north coast in Tela, Progreso and La Ceiba when they were repulsed by troops loyal to the government. They escaped with locomotives, cars and trucks from United Fruit , which owns 164,000 acres (unit) = 66,368 hectares of banana plantations and 250 miles of railroad in Honduras .

In Honduras, the market leader United Fruit Company continued to build a railway and invoked concessions that Manuel Bonilla had given Sam Zemurray in 1912 . Miguel Paz Barahona had revoked the concessions due to breaches of contract on the part of the UFCO. But UFCO kept working on the project. Why Vicente Mejía Colindres expressed the honor and sovereignty of Honduras was injured and threatened with violence without consequences.

Time prophesied: Vicente Mejia Colindres will retire to the lewd Puerto Cortes, where he would work as a doctor and raise cattle from three pedigree cows with three pedigree bulls, which United Fruit gave him after the elections in October 1932.

Until recently, General Carias was unlucky; since 1892 he has been well known as a revolutionary. In 1932, General Carias wisely included in his government program a guarantee of adequate protection for foreign investment. (United Fruit provides 65% of the wealth of Honduras, employs 250,000 of the 860,000 residents)

The candidate of the Partido Liberal de Honduras was Dr. José Ángel Zúñiga Huete (1885–1953 author of Presidentes de Honduras ).

Vicente Mejía Colindres lived in exile in San José , Costa Rica after his second presidency . He is buried in the Cementerio General in Tegucigalpa.
