Vicente Paterno

Vicente "Ting" Tirona Paterno (born November 18, 1925 in Quiapo, Manila ; † November 21, 2014 in Manila) was a Filipino politician and economic manager who was a minister during the tenure of President Ferdinand Marcos and a senator between 1987 and 1992 .

Life

Lecturer, Minister and Member of Parliament

After attending school, Paterno began studying mechanical engineering at the University of the Philippines , which he completed in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science (BS Mechanical Engineering). He completed a subsequent postgraduate course in management in 1953 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard University . From 1954 to 1962 he was a lecturer at the University of the Philippines, the University of De La Salle in Manila and the Ateneo de Manila University . In addition, he initially became a consultant and, in 1958, General Manager of Bacnotan Cement .

In 1970 Paterno became chairman of the Board of Investments ( BOI ) and held this position until July 24, 1979. At a cabinet meeting on September 11, 1973, President Ferdinand Marcos also appointed him to the newly created office of Minister of Industry (Minister of Industry) . In 1978 he was elected as a candidate for the Marcos-loyal list of the movement of the New Society KBL (Kilusang Bagong Lipunan) and a member of the Interim Congress (Interim Batasang Pambansa) . He came third on the list after the Governor of Metro Manila Imelda Marcos and Foreign Minister Carlos P. Rómulo . In the interim Batasang Pambansa he represented the capital district ( National Capital Region ) until 1984 . As part of a government reshuffle, he took on 24 July 1979 by Balthasar Aquino the Office of the Minister of Public Roads (Minister of Public Highways) , while Roberto Ongpin became the new industry minister. After the destruction caused by Typhoon Aring , he resigned from his post as Minister for Public Roads in November 1980.

Economic manager and senator

After leaving the government, Paterno became chairman of the board of the Philippine Seven Corporation , which operates the retail operations of the conglomerate 7-Eleven in the Philippines, and in 1986 chairman and president of the national oil company PNOC (Philippine National Oil Company) . After the fall of President Marcos during the EDSA Revolution from 23 to 25 February, 1986 he was selected by President Corazon Aquino as Deputy Executive Secretary of Energy (Deputy Executive Secretary for Energy) to the Office of the President in Malacañang Palace called and held this position until 1987.

In the Senate elections on May 11, 1987, Paterno was the candidate of the United Nationalist Democratic Union UNIDO (United Nationalist Democratic Organization) , which belonged to the LABAN (Lakas ng Bayan) coalition , with 9,647,680 personal votes (42.4 percent ) elected a member of the Senate on the 17th of the 24 seats to be allocated . He was a member of the Senate until the elections that followed on May 11, 1992 and decided not to run again. In 2013 he received the Ramon V. del Rosario Award for Nation Building .

His marriage to Socorro Paz Trinidad Pardo had five children. After his death he was buried in the San Antonio Cemetery in Forbes Park in Makati .
