Victor-Maurice, comte de Broglie
Victor-Maurice, comte de Broglie , comte de Revel, marquis de Brezolles and de Senonches (born March 12, 1647 in Turin , † August 4, 1727 in Buhy ), was a Maréchal de France .
Life
He came from the noble Broglie family, which was based in the Piémont . His parents were Francesco-Maria di Broglia (1611–1656) and Angélique de Vassal, comtesse de Favria. After the death of his father, he inherited the counties of Broglie and Revel and the margravate of Senonches. He was also appointed governor of La Bassée .
Military career
At the age of 19 he joined a cavalry regiment in 1666 as an officer and served in the Dutch War under the command of Louis II. De Bourbon, prince de Condé , and under Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, vicomte de Turenne . He took part in the sieges of Charleroi , Tournai , Lille and Maastricht .
At the head of his Chevau-légers regiment, he distinguished himself particularly at Condé , in the battle of Seneffe and off Maastricht, where his horse was killed under him.
On February 25, 1677 he was promoted to Maréchal de camp and on August 1, 1688 appointed lieutenant général des armées du Roi .
In December 1688 he was appointed military commander of the Languedoc .
Broglie was also used in the War of the Palatinate Succession .
From July 1702 to February 1703 he commanded the troops that fought the Camisards in the so-called Cevennes War . Louis XIV, who had not taken the revolt seriously at first, then had to realize that it was not so easy to suppress. Instead of sending reinforcements to Broglie, he replaced him on March 12, 1703 by the Maréchal de Montrevel .
On February 2, 1724 he was by King Louis XV. appointed Marshal of France.
Marriage and offspring
On August 29, 1666 he married Marie de Lamoignon (1645-1733), daughter of Guillaume I er de Lamoignon, the first speaker of parliament in Paris. She was the sister of Nicolas de Lamoignon de Baville, Intendant of Languedoc from 1685 to 1718.
Eight children were born to the couple:
- Joseph-Hyacinthe (1667–1693), killed in the siege of Charleroi
- Charles-Guillaume, marquis de Broglie (1669–1751), appointed lieutenant général in 1718
- Achille-Joseph (1670? –1758)
- François-Marie de Broglie (1671–1745), Maréchal de France, duc de Broglie
- Achille de Broglie (1672–1750), Seigneur du Helloy, called "Chevalier de Broglie"
- Charles-Maurice (1682–1766), abbot of the monastery of Les Vaux-de-Cernay in Cernay
