action

season 1

Emma and Lyn Hernandez are two sisters from Los Angeles with Mexican roots. The two hadn't seen each other for a while when they received news of the death of their mother Vidalia (who was mostly just called Vida). They go to their former home, which is in the Boyle Heights neighborhood . Emma feels uncomfortable at Vida's memorial service, while her sister is happy to see her childhood sweetheart Johnny again. In the church, Emma and Lyn meet a young woman named Cruz and Vidalia's roommate Eddy. When Johnny mentions that Eddy was actually Vida's wife, Emma gets angry, which Lyn cannot understand. In addition, Vida has ordered in her will that 30 percent of the ownership rights to her bar will be bequeathed to Eddy, while Emma and Lyn are to split the remaining 70 between them. The two agree to sell the bar, but encounter resistance from Eddy.

When Emma learns that there is a practically priceless mortgage approved by a loan shark on the bar , she gets into an argument with Eddy, who knew about the financial problems of her deceased partner, but also did not sell the bar because of her memories of the time with Vida would like to. In addition to her mother's money problems, Emma is also preoccupied with her own sexuality, of which she is not sure. After dating a non-binary person, she befriends Cruz. They fall in love, but when they try to have sex for the first time, Emma suffers a panic attack and reveals that Vida hid her own homosexuality behind a homophobic facade. Therefore, in her childhood, she sent Emma to a strict, conservative aunt in Texas , because she sensed her daughter's sexual orientation and wanted to prevent it.

Meanwhile, Lyn and Johnny, who is engaged and will soon be a father, have an affair with each other. His sister Marisol betrays them to Karla, Johnny's partner. After Johnny ends their relationship, Lyn meets a rich man who invites her to a party in the Hollywood Hills . There she deals with her origins for the first time in a long time, since the housekeeper is a Latina like her and is insulted by her superior because of this.

Marisol is approached by her crush Tlaloc after a meeting of anti- gentrification activists she often goes to. He persuades her to give him oral satisfaction, which he secretly films, and he later sends the video to the entire neighborhood.

production

According to showrunner Tanya Saracho , the people in charge at Starz commissioned a series that would deal with so-called gentefication , i.e. gentrification in Latin American neighborhoods. That is why Saracho, who was born in Mexico herself , put together an (almost entirely female) team of authors for Vida , in which all those involved have a Latin American background. In addition, women with these same roots were hired as casting directors, composers and film editors.

The LGBT representation was Saracho's proposal, identifying as queer .

Spanglish is often spoken in the series, and this mixture of English and Spanish can also be found in many of the plays written by Saracho. The code-switching , i.e. the change of languages within the sentences, which the characters often do, is often found in Americans with a Latin American background, including Saracho himself, who grew up in Texas .

occupation

The series was synchronized by Film- & Fernseh-Synchron based on dialogue books by Klaus Hüttmann and Änne Troester, directed by Hüttmann.
