The Viehmoorgraben is a brook on the Papenteich plateau and in the Aller glacial valley with a catchment area of almost 20 km² southwest of the city of Gifhorn. The brook flows into the Allerkanal between Ribbesbüttel and Brenneckenbrück .
topography
The brook arises southwest of Vollbüttel in an agricultural area and flows from here in a northerly direction past Vollbüttel, where the drain of a wastewater treatment plant flows into the brook. He turns to the northwest to the nature reserve " Viehmoor " near Leiferde . There it flows north and then through the forest area Leiferder Wald to the Fahlen Heide , before flowing into the Allerkanal about a kilometer west of Winkel .
Flora and fauna
In its upper reaches, the Viehmoorgraben has been largely straightened and expanded due to its course through agricultural land. It is used here partly as a drainage ditch. In the summer months, the water flow in the upper reaches is sometimes very low, which in times of poor rainfall expands to dry out completely. In the lower reaches, north of Vollbüttel, the stream has remained largely natural due to its location in the nature reserve.
There are four animal species that specialize in only temporarily existing bodies of water and are included on the Red List of the State of Lower Saxony:
- two different subspecies of the caddis fly
- a subspecies of the long-button water beetle
- a subspecies of the bladder snail
Water quality
The Lower Saxony water quality report from 2004 assesses the chemical water pollution of the Viehmoorgraben almost in the entire course as critically polluted (quality class II-III).
