The many-flowered knotweed ( Fallopia multiflora , syn .: Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. ) Is a plant species native to China from the knotweed family (Polygonaceae).

description

The multi-flowered knotweed is a climbing plant that climbs to a height of around 4.5 m. Flowering time is from September to October. The hermaphrodite flowers are pollinated by insects . The seeds ripen in October to November.

distribution

The multi-flowered knotweed is native to the Chinese provinces of Guangdong , Henan , Hubei , Jiangsu , Jiangxi , Shaanxi , Shanxi , Sichuan and Yunnan . In Japan the species is now found wild.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Fallopia multiflora var. Multiflora : She has the chromosome number 2n = 22.
  • Fallopia multiflora var. Hypoleuca (Nakai ex Ohwi) Yonekura & H. Ohashi : It has the chromosome number 2n = 44.

ingredients

Recent studies show that the roots of Fallopia multiflora in particular contain lecithin . Another essential component of the root extract is a substance that has a similar structure to resveratrol , a substance with antioxidant properties.

Traditional use

In China the plant is called he shou wu ( Chinese  何首乌 ). It is traditionally used as a medicinal plant. To do this, a preparation from the rhizome of the plant is used. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), he shou wu is used for ulcers and constipation, among other things. The remedy processed to zhi he shou wu is used in TCM, among other things, for sleep disorders, dizziness, weakness in arms and legs and itching.

Ho Shou Wu

According to a Chinese legend, Ho Shou Wu ("The Black Haired Man") was a seriously ill man at the age of 60. After he discovered the plant and took it regularly, he is said to have become massively younger, regained his potency and fathered four children. According to legend, the Fo-Ti-Teng consumer did not die until the age of 132.
