The four-banded narrowbuck ( Leptura quadrifasciata , syn .: Strangalia quadrifasciata ) is a species of beetle and belongs to the longhorn family and there to the subfamily of the narrowbuck (Lepturinae). The four- string part of the name is due to the conspicuous coloring. There are four yellow-orange transverse ligaments on the elytra of the black beetle.

features

The beetles are 11 to 19 mm long. Their antennae are about body length. The eyes grow around the antenna base from behind. The main feature is the striking yellow-orange transverse banding, which gives the beetles a wasp- like appearance and represents a mimicry . The transverse ligament is often jagged and varies in size. The legs and antennae in the male are monochrome black, in the female the black antennae are yellow-brown at the end. This distinguishes the species from the similar spotted small buck ( Strangalia maculata ), in which the antennae are ringed yellow-black and the legs are partially yellow.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area extends from large parts of Europe (not in the southwest) over the Caucasus and Siberia to the island of Sakhalin . The species is more common in the mountains than in the lowlands. The animals prefer moist forests or the vicinity of water .

Way of life

The adults feed on pollen and flower parts. They can be found on umbels and dead wood from mid-June to August . The larvae develop xylobiont in dead or mildew wood, preferably in the wood of willow , but also in other hardwoods such as oak , beech , birch , alder or hazel .
