Viktor Schooner

Viktor Schoner (born October 15, 1974 in Osterode am Harz ) is a German director .

Schoner, who grew up in Aschaffenburg , studied viola at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin and musicology with Gerd Rienäcker at Humboldt University . From 1999 to 2001 he was a fellow at the School of Arts and Science of New York University . From 2001 he was Gerard Mortier's personal advisor and dramaturgist at the Salzburg Festival , and then from 2002 to 2004 at the Ruhrtriennale . There he was in charge of the Creationen series - innovative music theater projects with artists such as Alain Platel , Robert Wilson , La Fura dels Baus , Bill Viola , Johan Simons , Peter Sellars , Christoph Marthaler and Emir Kusturica . From 2004 to 2008 he worked at the Opéra National de Paris , initially as Adjoint au Directeur, from 2006 as Directeur de la coordination artistique. From 2008 to 2017 he was artistic director of operations at the Bavarian State Opera under Artistic Director Nikolaus Bachler and was in charge of the festival for experimental forms of contemporary opera as part of the Munich Opera Festival . He has been artistic director of the Stuttgart State Opera since the 2018/19 season . His contract runs until 2024.

In the field of opera, Schoner also initiated the Akademie Musiktheater heute together with the conductor Titus Engel in 1998 , which has been continued as an initiative of Deutsche Bank since 2001, and the Ligerzer Opernwerkstatt from 2005 to 2010. He is also the editor and author of several publications on current music theater.
