The Viktoriaschule in Aachen is a grammar school sponsored by the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland , which arose from the "Evangelical Secondary School for Daughters " founded in 1870 . The school was renamed "Viktoria-Schule" in 1880 in honor of the then Prussian Crown Princess Viktoria .

history

The history of the Viktoriaschule in its first decades is essentially a history of the relationship between Aachen and Prussia and, more generally, of the Protestants in Aachen. Until the beginning of the 19th century, Protestant immigrants in Catholic Aachen, although there were numerous, were not allowed to found their own parish and celebrated their church service in Vaals in the Netherlands , which is a few kilometers from the city center of Aachen. That changed only in 1815 with the Congress of Vienna , as a result of which Aachen fell to the predominantly Protestant Kingdom of Prussia . In 1825 the Aachen Protestants elected their first superintendent. In 1870, on a Prussian (and thus Protestant) suggestion, the Royal Rhenish-Westphalian Polytechnic School in Aachen (today RWTH Aachen University) was founded. In the same year Protestant Aacheners, including Philipp Heinrich Cockerill , founded the Protestant secondary school for girls . As patron and namesake, they asked for patronage from the Prussian Crown Princess Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland , which led to the renaming of the Viktoriaschule in 1880 after her approval.

Around 1900 Leo Geschwandtner (* 1853) was director of the Viktoriaschule. He was a PhD senior teacher and a member of the board of the Aachen History Association . In 1908 the extension with the gymnasium was completed. As part of the DC circuit of schools by the Nazi regime came on April 1, 1936 merger with the St. Leonhard school . The resulting “Municipal Upper Lyceum with a three-year women's school” was provocatively called “Sankt Levi” by the Aacheners (for the National Socialists). The school was re-founded in 1956 by Protestant Aacheners and the new building began according to plans by the architects and building councilors FW Bertram and Elmar Lang. Until April 1962, the “Viktoriaschule an der Normaluhr”, also known as the “Viktoriaschule an der Normaluhr”, housed the sixth, fifth and fourth classes of the Rhein-Maas-Gymnasium Aachen . In 1971, coeducation was introduced at the Viktoriaschule and in 1974 the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland took over the sponsorship of the school, which to this day is additionally supported by the Aachen parish. In 1976, the differentiated upper level with three advanced courses (Victoria model, specially approved) was introduced.

particularities

Configurani school circus

The sports teachers working at the Victoria School Franz-Josef "Krenne" Ayman taught in October 1989 a "unicycle and juggling AG a" where initially 20 students involved. After the premiere on June 6, 1990 in the school auditorium, another 18 appearances followed in the course of the year, including at the Kiel Week , the Aachen City Festival and various smaller events, as well as the renaming to Circus Configurani (Latin for circus of the designers ).

Special campaigns in the next few years included appearances at the church days in Dortmund, Hamburg, Munich, Leipzig and Cologne as well as at the circus festivals in Celle, Hamburg, Cologne and Hückelhoven. Other highlights were the appearance in the Roncalli circus , active participation in some Höhner Rockin Roncalli shows , as well as performances at the Expo 2000 in Hanover, in the Apollo Variete Düsseldorf and at the European Juggling Conventions in Barcelona, Svendborg, Lille, Karlsruhe and Munich.

The founder Krenne Aymans, who works half-time as a sports teacher and the other half for the circus, was awarded the trophy "Golden Pauker" by the KI.KA magazine Reläxx in 2004 for his commitment as a "circus-enthusiastic, balancing and juggling" teacher .

60 minute model

Since the beginning of the 2008/09 school year, one lesson at the Viktoriaschule no longer takes 45 minutes, as is usual, but one full hour. This change was a consequence of the shortened course of study in the eight-year grammar school , which requires that the lessons be concentrated. All timetables and schedules were switched to the new model.

Three advanced courses

At the Viktoriaschule, students choose three advanced courses for the qualification phase (not two as is common in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia). At the beginning of Q2, one of these subjects is graded to the basic course, but still taught in the number of hours of the advanced course. The graded subject then represents the third written Abitur subject.
