Vilhelm Melbye (born May 14, 1824 in Helsingør ; died October 6, 1882 in Roskilde ) was a Danish painter.

Life

Knud Frederik Vilhelm Hannibal Melbye was a brother of Anton Melbye (1818–1875) and Fritz Melbye (1826–1869), who were also painters. Melbye received his painting training from 1844 to 1847 at the Royal Danish Academy of Art , with Carl Dahl and his brother Anton. In 1847 he exhibited a picture of a pilot boat in rough weather in Charlottenborg Palace . In 1847 he traveled to Iceland . From 1848 to 1849 he lived in Düsseldorf to study at the Düsseldorf School of Painting . In 1849 he stayed in Paris, where he also worked in Théodore Gudin's studio . Between 1851 and 1866 he lived mainly in London . He traveled to Portugal , Spain and Morocco . Back in Copenhagen he married the pianist Nanny Matthison-Hansen (1830–1915), daughter of the organist Hans Matthison-Hansen . From 1871 he taught at the Copenhagen Academy and was appointed professor there in 1880. He was buried in the assistance cemetery.
