Ville Sirén (born February 11, 1964 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League from 1981 to 1999 .
Career
Ville Sirén began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth field of Ilves Tampere , for whose professional team he was active in the SM-liiga from 1982 to 1985 . With Ilves he won the Finnish Championship for the first and only time in his career in the 1984/85 season . During his time at Ilves, the defender was also selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1983 in the second round as a total of 23 players by the Hartford Whalers , for whom he never played. On November 16, 1984 Hartford gave the rights to the Finns in exchange for Pat Boutette to the Pittsburgh Penguins on, for which he in three years National Hockey League was on the ice before it on December 17, 1988 along with Steve Gotaas in Exchange for Gord Dineen and Scott Bjugstad was given to the Minnesota North Stars . After one and a half years with the Minnesota North Stars in the NHL, Sirén returned to his Finnish homeland in the summer of 1990, where he received a contract with HPK Hämeenlinna from the SM-liiga. There he stayed for a season as well as then with his league rivals and his ex-club Ilves Tampere.
From 1992 to 1995, the left shooter ran in the Swedish Elitserien for Luleå HF and VIK Västerås HK , where he was defeated in the 1992/93 season with Luleå only in the final for the championship Brynäs IF . After the former national player started the 1995/96 season at EHC Olten in National League B , he moved to SC Bern from National League A shortly before the end of the season . With Bern, for which he was on the ice for a total of two years, he won the Swiss championship in the 1996/97 season . The 1997/98 season ended Sirén at SG Cortina from the Italian Serie A , for which he only played two games, in which he scored one goal and gave two assists. Following the 1998/99 season, in which he was under contract with the reigning Finnish champions HIFK Helsinki , the two-time Olympian ended his career at the age of 35.
International
For Finland Sirén took part in the Junior World Championships in 1983 and 1984 , as well as the World Championships in 1985 , 1991 and 1993 . He was also in Finland's squad at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and 1992 in Albertville .
