The villa colony refers to a statistical district in Darmstadt-Eberstadt .

history

In 1898 the Hotel Waldfrieden was built as the first building . Shortly after the turn of the century, investors and speculators began to develop the forest villa colony. The villa colony developed very slowly at first. In 1914 only 33 villas were completed. The residents were mostly retirees, retired officers and privateers. Few villas were built during the First World War. A building boom set in in the 1920s.

Almost only the villas from the early years are listed as historical monuments. These houses were planned by architects such as Fritz Becker , Heinrich Metzendorf and Peter Müller. To the east of the villa colony, Elizabeth Duncan had a spacious school built in 1911 - today's Marienhöhe School Center . The architect was Rudolf Tillessen from Mannheim . The villa colony survived the Second World War unscathed.

The colony is a good example of the different architectural styles of the era between the end of the 19th century and the Second World War. The many beeches that were planted on the area are typical of the villa colony.
