features

Dried top of a hat of a fruiting body of the violet whitefish spike

Macroscopic features

The hat is flatly curved, later spread out and has a slightly recessed center. It reaches a diameter between three and ten, sometimes up to 15 centimeters. Often several hats are fused together. The surface is initially whitish and fibrous-scaly. In old age it is darker purple-gray, brown or reddish in color. The edge is often lighter and bent down. The underside is covered with young whitish, later gray, up to six millimeters long spines. They run down the stick easily. They sometimes turn dirty gray-brown on pressure. The stem becomes up to ten inches long and 0.5 to 2 inches thick. The meat is soft. It is dirty whitish in color with a purple hue. The smell is pleasant and, especially after lying down for a long time, of lovage . The spore powder is white.

Microscopic features

The spores are colorless, rounded and covered with fine, up to 0.5 µm long spines. Their dimensions are 4.5–5.5 × 4–4.5 µm. The basidia are 25–38 x 5–7 μm in size. The hyphae in the hat are up to 23 μm wide.

Species delimitation

The dark-hatched, smoke-colored Weißsporstacheling ( Bankera fuligineoalba ) is usually found under pines and has no scaly skin; Soil particles have mostly grown into these. The spurs are narrower.

ecology

The violet whitefish spike is a mycorrhizal fungus that lives together with conifers, usually spruce . The species inhabits mossy, moist spruce-fir forests on soils that are rich in base as well as poor in base, forest edges, aisles and light spots in spruce forests. The fruiting bodies appear in Central Europe from June to October.

distribution

The violet Weißsporstacheling is common in North America and Europe. In Europe it occurs in northern temperate areas and in mountains, its distribution area ranges from Western Europe to Romania, to the north the species can be found to Estonia, Finland and Scandinavia. In Germany, the sites are mainly in the mountains and mainly in the southern part of the country.
