Vitālijs Smirnovs (born June 28, 1986 in Riga ) is a Latvian football player who plays at FK Ventspils in Virslīga .

Career

Vitālijs Smirnovs started his career in his hometown Riga, the largest city in the Baltic States . In his youth he played for Skonto Riga , the record champions in Latvia, for whom he also made his professional debut in the 2004 season in Virslīga . Under Aleksandrs Starkovs he was able to win the championship title with the team in the same year. He won further titles in 2010/11 with the championship and victory in the Baltic League in the final against FK Ventspils . After eight seasons and over 100 league appearances as well as numerous European Cup matches, the tall Smirnovs moved to FK Ventspils at the beginning of the 2012 season . With the new club from the port city of the same name, he won the Latvian Cup in the second year of membership .

National team

Vitālijs Smirnovs made his debut in 2010 with Daniils Turkovs in the Latvian national soccer team against China . It was also the last international match of Vitālijs Astafjevs , the European record international . With the national team of his home country he took part in the Baltic Cup in 2012 and was able to win it after two victories against Lithuania and Finland . The defensive player was in the starting line-up in both games and scored a goal on penalties in the final.
