Vivienne Newport

Vivienne Newport (born December 4, 1951 in Bristol ; † April 27, 2015 in Berlin ) was a dancer , choreographer and director of the company Vivienne Newport, founded in October 1981 at the Frankfurt Theater am Turm (TAT) .

Life

After studying dance in London , Vivienne Newport received her further dance training at the Folkwang University in Essen. The dancer, choreographer and dance teacher Kurt Jooss had set up master classes there in 1961, from which the “Folkwang Ballet” later emerged. In 1969 Pina Bausch succeeded Kurt Jooss as artistic director. With the beginning of the 1973/74 season she took over the direction of the ballet of the Wuppertaler Bühnen . In 1973 Vivienne Newport belonged to Malou Airaudo , Jan Minařík , Dominique Mercy , Tjitske Broersma and Gabriel Sala to the first generation of dancers of the newly founded dance theater Wuppertal Pina Bausch . The first piece was premiered on January 5, 1974: Fritz, a dance evening by Pina Bausch with music by Gustav Mahler and Wolfgang Hufschmidt , coupled with “Der Grüne Tisch” by Kurt Jooss and “Rodeo” by Agnes de Mille .

Vivienne Newport's grave is in the Friedrichswerder cemetery in Berlin.
