Viy 2: Journey to China ( Russian Тайна печати дракона Taina Petschati Drakona , Chinese 龙牌之谜 ) is a Russian - Chinese Fantasy - Adventure in the year 2019. It represents the continuation of the movie Prince of Demons from the year 2014 represents the again loosely based on the story Wij by Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Gogol . The script for the film, produced by Gleb Fetisov, Alexey A. Petrukhin and Sergey Sozanovskiy and directed by Oleg Stepchenko, was contributed by Stepchenko, Petrukhin and Dmitri Palees. The cast included Jason Flemyng , Charles Dance (who both took their roles from the first film), Rutger Hauer (in one of his final roles), Jackie Chan , Arnold Schwarzenegger and Yao Xingtong .

Viy 2: Journey to China was released in China by Universal Pictures on August 16, 2019 .

At the beginning of the 18th century, Jonathan Green left England to map eastern Russia. In the end, however, he has to travel to China to see the Dragon King and take on the Russian tsar in the iron mask, who escaped from the Tower of London .

On April 5, 2015, producers Alexey Petrukhin and Sergei Selyanov and actors Jason Flemyng , Rutger Hauer and Anna Yo announced at a press conference in Moscow that filming of Viy 2: Journey to China had started. It was also announced that members of Jackie Chan's stunt team will be used in the fight scenes.

Initially, it was reported that Jackie Chan , Jason Statham and Steven Seagal would star in the film. In November 2016, it was confirmed that Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger could be seen in the film.

The film was shot in 3D with two ARRI Alexa M on a STEREOTEC Mid Size Rig, two ARRI Alexa Mini on a STEREOTEC Light Weight Rig and a CODEX Action Cam 3D on a STEREOTEC Nano Rig.

Viy 2 was originally scheduled to be released in Russia on August 16, 2018. However, the date was postponed to September 19, 2019, as the approval of the Chinese censorship agency was pending. After the film was finally approved, it was released in China on August 16, 2019.

In the Philippines, Viy 2 was released on September 20, 2019 under the title The Dragon Seal by Pioneer Films.

The film was released in the United States and United Kingdom on April 10, 2020 under the title The Iron Mask .

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a 20% approval rating based on 20 reviews. An average of 3.56 out of 10 points was awarded.
