Voßbarg is in Ostfriesland located Reihendorf that the town Wiesmoor in the district of Aurich belongs. It is a bog colony , but it does not count as a fen settlement because there was no canal as a starting point for settlement. Vossbarg consists largely of pasture land and is predominantly agricultural. Strackholt is to the west of Voßbarg , Wiesmoor to the east and Zwischenbergen to the south .

history

After King Frederick II of Prussia's edict of land reclamation, many new settlements were founded in East Frisia in order to secure space and livelihoods for the growing population.

As early as 1778 the first colonists tried to settle in the so-called Colleger Heidfeld east of Strackholt. In 1780 the first piece of land with an area of 3 diemat (about 1.5 ha) was measured for Rencke Janßen . Shortly afterwards, other settlers settled: Claas Janßen , Otto Christoffers , Jan Focken and Harm Habben . Vossbarg was still one of Strackholt's. A few years later, in 1787, Vossbarg becomes an independent municipality.

The first bog colonists lived as farmers from growing buckwheat . From 1824 onwards, some craftsmen, carpenters, blacksmiths, innkeepers, tailors, bakers and shoemakers also settled in Vossbarg. Two general stores were also built, a horse mill and a windmill. Because many files were sold as waste paper when the Aurich Castle was rebuilt in 1851 , the above statements cannot be documented.

Because in the 19th century the arable land of the Vossbarg colony, which had been depleted by the bog fire culture, was no longer sufficient to feed its residents, many residents moved to Zwischenbergen and later to Fiebing . Between 1850 and 1900, numerous Vossbargers emigrated to America, for example to Iowa , because of the economic and political difficulties .

The most famous inhabitant of this period was Jantjemöh or Jannchen Willms Brinkmann Saathoff . She was born on October 25, 1803 and lived with her husband Balze Janssen Saathoff in a small bog cottage. He died in 1900. A few years later she moved in with her son and died there in 1908 at the age of 105.

In 1909 the Wiesmoor peat power plant was put into operation. Now the Vossbarg residents found a permanent job there in peat extraction, and from 1925 also in the vegetable nursery , the Wiesmoor nursery . Most of the land sites were only operated as a sideline.

On July 1, 1972, Vossbarg became a district of the city of Wiesmoor. In 1987 the bicentenary was celebrated.
