action

In the elaborate production the period from the rise to the fall of the Fugger family was traced. The starting point is Hans Fugger , who went to Augsburg as a simple farmer, learned the weaving trade there and went from journeyman to master. The high point of the Fugger era was the reign of Jakob Fugger, known as the Rich, who turned the company into a power institution in the empire and was considered to be one of the wealthiest men of his era. With his death, however, the family began to slowly decline into insignificance.

The series describes the structure of that epoch, the influence of the Church and the Pope, the troubled times of the Reformation and peasant wars as well as the class society . Likewise the time of the plague , the persecution of the Jews and the intrigues and power-political intrigues of the countless princes and other nobles. The age of the Fugger is characterized by change, the transition from the late Middle Ages to a new era. This also includes long-distance trade to America, the recently discovered continent.

The private life is also portrayed, the person who was behind the person of Jakob Fugger . His personal fate and work has a broad framework in the series. He himself had recognized that the company that he made big and powerful could hardly continue to exist in the framework after his death, especially since he did not believe in his relatives. With his successor, Antoni Fugger, the company's gradual decline began. Fittingly, the name of the last episode, with the title “Nothing under the sun endures” (Latin: Nihil sub sole perpetuum ). This saying has come down to us from Antoni Fugger.
