The foreman Steffens was a sea rescue cruiser of the 27.5 m class of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS).

General

The foreman Steffens was in 1989 by the ship and shipyard Schweers in Bardenfleth under the hull number built 6,473th The DGzRS internal designation is KRS 19. The daughter boat Adele (hull number 1061) has the internal designation KRT 19. The ship was christened on April 22, 1989 in Bremen-Vegesack , in honor of the Steffens family in Neuharlingersiel , from their ranks since 1873 foremen and rescue men have emerged again and again . The daughter boat was named in honor of an unnamed donor in favor of the DGzRS.

Stationings and whereabouts

The foreman Steffens was stationed in Wilhelmshaven from May 12, 1989 to December 1994 . From December 1994 to November 2017, the rescue cruiser was part of the station in the outer harbor of Hooksiel . On December 1, 2017, it was retired.

The ship was sold to the city of Rostock , which had it converted into a fireboat with the name Albert Wegener by August 2018 at the Tamsen shipyard for around two million euros .

The fireboat is stationed at the pier of the fire station See of the Rostock professional fire brigade in the Groß Klein district . The daughter boat has been set up next to the DGzRS information center near the Warnemünder lighthouse since September 2018 .

Special features and accident

The foreman Steffens is the only ship of the 27.5-meter class that is not on the Vegesacker Lürssen shipyard was built, but on the Schweers Shipyard in Bardenfleth. In the delivery condition, it stood out from the previously built sister ships u. a. due to the building windows, which are less rounded in the corners. On the sister ships Arkona and Bremen , which were delivered in the early 90s , the window corners were again angular.

On the night of August 20 to 21, 1990, the foreman Steffens was caught on a mission in the Outer Jade by a transverse lake and pushed under water to the middle of the ship, with the galley and washroom windows being pushed in on the port side. In the accident, the sea rescuer Dieter Steffens, a member of the eponymous family, went overboard, but was found after 45 minutes and survived.

During the subsequent repairs at the shipyard, the washroom window was replaced by a classic porthole . As a result of the knowledge that the DGzRS was able to gain after the accident or reconstruction of the Alfried Krupp in 1995, the units of the 27.5 meter class stationed in the North Sea were provided with completely new deckhouse windows during stays in the shipyard at the end of the 1990s , whereby only the lower steering position received large-format windows made of bulletproof glass, while smaller portholes were installed in the adjoining living area, which are more resistant to breakage due to their design. In addition to the foreman Steffens , Hermann Helms stationed in Cuxhaven was also affected.

The roll cage with net covering mounted on the upper operator's platform in the same context had not proven itself and was dismantled again in 2005.

In 2002, the Vormann Steffens was the first ship in its class to be fitted with new on-board electronics, with the lower control stand being redesigned. In particular, the radar, electronic nautical chart and all of the on-board communication facilities were completely renewed. The costs were borne by the VR-Stiftung der Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken in Northern Germany.
