Vulcanite , chemically copper (II) telluride , is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of sulfides and sulfosalts . It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with the chemical composition CuTe and forms 0.1 to 1.1 mm large, prismatic or leaf-like crystals as well as massive inclusions of bronze-yellow color.

Etymology and history

The mineral was first discovered in 1961 by EN Cameron, EN and IM Threadgold in the Good Hope Mine near Vulcan , Colorado . They named it after the place where it was found.

classification

In the Strunz system , vulcanite is counted among the metal sulfides with a ratio of metal to sulfur, selenium or tellurium of 1: 1. After the 8th edition, it forms its own group. In the 9th edition , it forms a separate subgroup of sulfides with zinc , iron , copper or silver .

In the Dana system , it forms its own subgroup of sulfides, selenides and tellurides with the composition A m B n X p , with (m + n): p = 1: 1.

Education and Locations

Vulcanite forms together with other telluride ores. It is associated with rickardite , tellurium , petzite and sylvanite .

Only seven sites are known of the very rare mineral (as of July 2010). In addition to the type locality , Vulcanite was found on the Greek island of Tinos , Iriki on the Japanese island of Kyushu , Kautokeino in Norway , the province of Medina in Saudi Arabia and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia .

Crystal structure

Vulcanite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system in the space group Pmnm (space group no. 59) with the lattice parameters a = 4.09  Å , b = 6.95 Å and c = 3.15 Å as well as two formula units per unit cell .
