Wüstenselbitz is a district of the city of Helmbrechts . Wüstenselbitz is located west of Helmbrechts on the road to Kulmbach .

history

Wüstenselbitz emerged as a rural settlement, but home weaving soon became the largest branch of the economy. Textile companies still shape the image of Wüstenselbitz today.

The meaning of the place name is not known, there are different interpretations. The river "Selwicz" was mentioned for the first time in 1374, the village "Selbicz" was mentioned in a sales deed of April 28, 1386. The name Oberselbitz did not appear after a wave of plague in which all residents except one couple died. 1417 was first called "Wüstenselwicz". There is a record of a dispute in 1523, as a result of which only Helmbrechts was allowed to brew beer.

The rural community of Wüstenselbitz with the districts Burkersreuth, Ottengrün, Hildbrandsgrün, Poppenreuth, Ahornis and Maxreuth was founded in 1818 by the second community edict. The community was in two different parishes, which is why it was divided again in 1848. Burkersreuth, Ottengrün, Thomashölzlein, Buckel, Eng, Rappetenreuth, Dreschersreuth , Hohberg and the Geigersmühle remained at Wüstenselbitz .

In 1871 Wüstenselbitz was largely destroyed in a fire. The church that still exists was consecrated in 1901. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary in 1951, it was given the name Dr. Martin Luther Church.

Wüstenselbitz had three schools over the years, the first two (built in 1820 and 1869) were abandoned, the third was inaugurated in 1910 and closed in 1992 due to low student numbers. Since then, the building has served as a kindergarten and is also used by the local volunteer fire brigade , whose fire station is directly attached.

The town hall was inaugurated in 1962. On the occasion of the regional reform , Wüstenselbitz was incorporated into Helmbrechts on July 1, 1972.

Economy and Infrastructure

The former Wüstenselbitz station is now a single-track stop with a concrete bus shelter

V. Fraas , the world market leader in the field of scarves and textile accessories with 25 locations worldwide, has its headquarters in Wüstenselbitz. The company was founded in 1880 by Valentin Fraas.

In addition, the Raiffeisenbank Wüstenselbitz eG, one of the smallest cooperative banks in Upper Franconia and the only remaining independent bank in the municipality of Helmbrechts, has its headquarters and at the same time the only branch in Wüstenselbitz.

Wüstenselbitz is on the Helmbrechts – Münchberg railway line . The station was demolished in 1984, today Wüstenselbitz is just a stop .
