Włodzimierz Dworzaczek (born October 28, 1905 in Minsk Litewski , † September 23, 1988 in Posen ) was a Polish historian .

Life

Dworzaczek was born in Minsk as the son of the teacher and journalist Włodzimierz Dworzaczek and Maria Ziemięcka, Nieczuja coat of arms. There he attended the Polish school for a few years, but then moved to Poznan via a short stopover in Łódź , where he obtained higher maturity at the grammar school . He then studied history in Poznan and received his doctorate in 1932 . One of his early works sought to continue the findings of Artur Reiski and Adam Boniecki on Polish nobility and heraldry . Both his pertinent manuscript and the Boniecki-Reiski archive were destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 when the Krasiński library burned.

After the Second World War , in 1947, Dworzaczek obtained his habilitation at the University of Poznan , but this was initially not approved for political reasons. From 1955 he was assistant professor, 1957 associate professor and from 1968 full professor. Nevertheless, he had been head of the Polish History Department since 1958. He stayed in this position until 1975.

With his two-volume work Genealogia , he has created the only compendium on genealogy in the Polish-speaking world. In addition to instructions on the scientific method, it contains family tables of the ruling families of Poland and neighboring countries as well as the most important Polish aristocratic families. Dworzaczek contributed over 200 individual articles to the Polski Słownik Biograficzny . In addition, his collection of registers with several monographs , which can be viewed at the Biblioteka Kórnicka, has received a lot of attention and is often used .

Dworzaczek married Jolanta Essmanowska (1923–2017) in 1951 , assistant at the chair for history at the University of Poznan and later professor there. She was a specialist in the time of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation.

Footnotes

  1. Dworzaczek was baptized (Julian) on April 30, 1906. In the baptism certificate, the date of birth is October 15th July. / October 28,  1905 greg. called. This date of birth is also in his Abitur certificate from 1925, but in his family's population register in Poznan the wrong date is already October 15, 1906, which, however, was often used in the referring literature.
