Wilfrid Bennett Lewis
Wilfrid Bennett Lewis , CC , CBE , FRSC , FRS (born June 24, 1908 in Castle Carrock, Cumberland , England , † January 10, 1987 in Deep River , Ontario ) was a Canadian physicist and nuclear technician who played a major role in the development and its Organization for the Canadian CANDU nuclear reactor was involved.
Life
Lewis graduated from the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory with a PhD in physics in 1934. He continued his research in nuclear physics there until 1939. From 1939 to 1946 he worked for the Air Ministry , most recently as Chief Superintendent of the Telecommunications Research Establishment . In 1946 he moved to Canada in exchange for JD Cockcroft , where he worked as head of the nuclear energy research department at the National Research Council of Canada at Chalk River Laboratories . From 1952 he worked for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), from 1952 to 1963 as its Vice President for Research and Development, then from 1963 to 1973 as Vice President and Scientific Director.
From the mid-1940s, Lewis led the development of the CANDU system, which uses natural uranium as a nuclear fuel and heavy water (deuterium oxide) to control the flow of neutrons. In commercial operation, this system is characterized by its particular economy and high level of security. The AECL also became the world leader in the production of radioisotopes for medical purposes.
From 1973 until his death in 1987, Lewis was a Distinguished Professor of Science at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
From 1955 to 1987 he represented Canada on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Secretary General of the United Nations , and until 1971 also at the Geneva nuclear conferences . He was also a member of the scientific advisory board for the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In 1994 Ruth Fawcett published his biography under the title Nuclear Pursuits .
