The interface of the WOWCube described with Processing

WOWCube or WowCube is a handheld console in the shape of a cube and an electronic thinking game that is classified as a rotating puzzle with the tangible user interface and has a shape pocket cube (2 × 2 × 2 variant of magic cube ). The WOWCube consists of eight identical cubes, which work as a whole, and starts the puzzle games written in pawn .

The WOWCube was developed with the open source hardware . The developers are Sawwa Ossipow and his father Ilya Ossipow.

The developers

WOWCube in your hands

The concept of the console was offered in 2016 by the student Sawva Ossipov. Sawwa, whose family comes from Nizhny Novgorod and lives in Novato , California now, became interested in electronics and programming when he was 10 years old. His few projects have been published in the Hackster developer web community.

Ilya Osipov, Sawwa's father, is an IT entrepreneur and an alumnus of Nizhny Novgorod State University. He is also a participant in many different start-ups (for example: Nizhny Novgorod news portal), patent holder and a reviewer of a Dutch scientific journal. Ilya became a programmer and won several Russian Computer Science Olympiads. In 2012 he sold his business to Hearst Shkulev Media and moved his family to California, where he started collecting the various devices from the Raspberry Pi and Arduino computers (the mini-computers, the electronic picture frames and the gamepads). Sawwa participates with father in the hackathons in San Francisco and Silicon Valley , where they presented many different things (the Christmas taillight, the Angry Birds console, the smart picture frames and various toys made with the 3D printer).

The evolution of the cube

Ilya Osipov came up with an idea for the electronic game: the dice, which consist of uniform elements that interact with screens. He later discovered that this idea had already been patented and that the developers had received the investment of US $ 20 million. Sawwa offered him a modified version of this idea. The Rubik's Cube could have six faces as screens, the rotation of the faces could change the entire playing field. Sawwa's idea became the basis of the WOWCube project. The implementation of the cubes with the same areas can appeal to children and adults.

Grigory Bubnow (President of the Moscow University of Technology ), Denis Mitrofanow (Moscow Business School President and owner of the amoCRM company) and FERMOSA Foundation have invested US $ 500,000 in the project (for three WOWCube prototypes). The amount was later increased by US $ 1.4 million after an investment by BitFury owner Marat Kitschikow. WOWCube was developed within six months. Ilja was responsible for creating the script, Sawwa developed ideas for the game and took part in discussions about the look and functionality of the game. In 2017 the first prototype was prepared by the Arduino designer and the IIIP Monoprice 3D printer (Sawwa used to print himself because he sold the toys for a few US dollars). The puzzle had 2x2x2 cubes (as in Larry Nichol's magnetic puzzle) and was modeled at SketchUp Programs. Sawwa and Ilja did not use the radio channel as a focus; they also rejected Android or Linux as the operating system.

On June 8, 2017, the first prototype was presented at the CALL meeting at the University of California, Berkeley . In November 2017, Ilya and Savva Ossipov received patents from Russia, China and the USA; later they applied for patents in eight highly developed countries. In January 2018 the device was announced at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas , in May 2018 it was presented to the public at the Maker Faire in Santa Clara , California. At Arizona's Signature Tech Event (October 16-17, 2019) the WOWCube developers met Apple founder Steve Wozniak , who signed a copy of the WOWCube. The authors were offered a collaboration with WOZUEducation. Cubios Inc. CEO Max Filin said the company plans to make 200 copies with Weather, Date & Time and Latest News apps (messages can be demonstrated when the WOWCube is charged). The purchase price varies from US $ 149 to US $ 249.

The next exhibitions are CES in January 2020 and Toyfair in spring 2020.

description

Physically

WOWCube is a cube that consists of eight autonomous modules. They have 24 screens and rotate relative to each other than in the Rubik's Cube . The flow of data between autonomous modules is supported by the magnetic connections, so the game process runs unhindered. You can turn and shake the dice in your hands. The brain games, mazes, puzzles, scrabble and arcades are compatible with WOWCube. The mixed reality experience combines rotation and shaking with digital actions. Each game is visualized on 24 square screens. WOWCube has features of dynamic toys, spinners , and various console.

Technically

Interface of the WOWCube 3D emulator described under Processing

WOWCube consists of eight identical sections that exchange information between the groups of neodymic magnetic compounds. . +. These sections not only ensure the balance of the toy, but also the play process. The neodymic balloons in the spherical support let the sections turn around their axis; and this construction was patented as a UniSex rotating magnetic connection.

The dimensions are 76 × 76 × 76 mm, the weight is 400 g. The fuselage is made of ABS plastic. Each section consists of:

The platform

The operating system is FreeRTOS , the abstract machine of the Pawn programming language is used for P-code interpretation. The compiled logic can do this not only in the console, but also in the program emulator. WOWCube SDK has an emulator that allows games to run on the PC without a console. All components of the WOWCube software are available under the free licenses MIT license , BSD license and Apache license .

Terminal program

SDK WOWCube has a program emulator with which the software can be developed without a console. WOWCube supports Windows and MacOS operating systems. Emulator is described for free software with open source:

  • Processing : the 3D visualization of the console and the transmission of the events (the rotation, the action to the accelerometer) translated on Pawn. In WOWCube, C is used instead of Processing. API is the same for interacting with Pawn in both WOWCube and Emulator.
  • Pawn : the writing of the game logic that reacts to the events in WOWCube or in the emulator. The logic sends the data stream for the visualization.
  • Visual Studio Code integrated development environment : editing the Pawn game code, starting the game in the emulator, editing the 3D visualizer code in WOWCube.

Initially, two games were available in test mode - the collection of butterflies of two parts and the collection of the pipeline. Ilya Osipov had the other ideas of the games (for example, a game where you have to collect the shives on the edge, or emulation Pac-Man made with Bandai Namco). The games for WOWCube are now available in the Apple Store .

Counterpart

  • Siftable (or Sifteo , made by MIT Media Lab), a class of cubes that can show the images, determine their position and interact with other modules. When the cubes connect, stoop, shake, or turn over, the interaction occurs. Each cube has a color display, four infrared interfaces, the Bluetooth module, the flash memory and the accelerometer .
  • GoCube (made by the Tel Aviv Development Group ), an electronic version of the Rubik's Cube and a sporty gadget. It is connected to a smartphone or tablet via bluetooth. GoCube lets users take part in speed cubing competitions or learn something through data from the disk.
