The World Animal Protection (formerly World Society for the Protection of Animals - WSPA) is an international animal welfare organization that has been active for more than 30 years. The charity describes its vision as follows: A world where animal welfare is important and animal cruelty has come to an end.

The organization has regional offices in Africa , Asia , Europe , Latin and North America as well as 15 country offices. The international headquarters are in London .

history

The organization was formerly known as the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). This resulted from the merger of two animal welfare organizations in 1981; the World Federation for the Protection of Animals (WFPA, founded in 1953) and the International Society for the Protection of Animals (ISPA, founded in 1959). In June 2014 the organization was renamed "World Animal Protection".

Campaigns

Animals in the wild

In 1985, WSPA launched a campaign to ban bullfighting in French and Spanish cities.

In the 1990s, the organization helped to ban the bear dance in Greece, Turkey and India. In India, the organization funded a sanctuary for bears that had previously been traded.

After an investigative research by the BBC in September 2013, the organization launched a campaign against the trade in Kopi Luwak coffee. Since then, various traders have stopped selling this coffee.

There is also a campaign in Asia to end the bear bile industry. In Pakistan, a change in the law aims to end bear fights and give former bear owners an alternative livelihood. Rescued bears find refuge in a sanctuary.

The WSPA also bears the majority of the expenditure for the Zărneşti bear reserve in Romania, which was established with their support in 2005 .

Animals in communities with humans

The organization works to end killing campaigns on stray dogs . In many countries these are used in the fight against rabies .

The organization emphasizes that only vaccination measures can effectively help against rabies and works together with governments to initiate vaccination programs. In 2012, a mass vaccination program began in the Chinese provinces of Shaanxi , Guizhou and Anhui in collaboration with the Chinese Animal Health Authority . Since June 2014, 750 vets have been trained and more than 90,000 dogs have been vaccinated. Mass vaccination programs were also carried out in Bali , the Philippines , Bangladesh , Kenya , Zanzibar , Kathmandu and Nepal .

A second focus is the population management of stray dogs. This is done using proven methods such as education, improved legislation, registration and dog identification, sterilization and contraception , animal shelters and placement agencies. The organization helps governments develop appropriate programs, controls and evaluations based on a model described in "Humane Dog Population Management Guidance". This November 2007 document was developed by The International Companion Animal Management Coalition (ICAM Coalition). World Animal Protection is a member of the ICAM coalition.

Veterinary services, such as mobile veterinary clinics for cats and dogs, but also for pet owners who cannot afford to take care of their animals, are often part of these aid programs. The animals are sterilized, vaccinated and, if necessary, also given other medical care. Such programs can be found in Sri Lanka, Zanzibar, Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Sierra Leone and Bali.

Another focus is the help for working animals (horses, donkeys and mules) in the West Bank, where neglect and torture are increasingly detected by mobile animal clinics. The partner organization “Palestine Wildlife Society” says: “In every community we train people who pass on their knowledge of horse care to other people. You will take part in workshops and visit communities where our training courses are already successful. Then share what they have learned. As the message spreads, behavior changes and animal welfare improves. And because the animals are doing better, the standard of living of their owners also improves. "

Animals in disaster

The organization has two disaster relief teams in Asia and Latin America. After a disaster, they travel to the worst affected areas to provide animal emergency aid, distribute animal food and - where possible - bring animals back together with their owners. This work is especially important in developing countries where people and communities depend on their animals for food, transportation and income. The organization also works with governments and local animal welfare associations in risk areas to develop national early warning systems there. She also trains the communities to protect their animals in the event of a disaster.

As part of the BBC documentary "Vets in the Disaster Zone", the organization's disaster relief work in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013 was filmed and broadcast on BBC Two on April 28, 2014.

Farm animal husbandry

World Animal Protection works with governments, the food industry and farmers to improve animal welfare in agriculture. Consumers are encouraged to buy food from animal-friendly production systems. In 2013, World Animal Protection partnered with Compassion in World Farming to develop business benchmark on farm animal welfare (BBFAW). The newspaper The Guardian reported that since the publication of corporate standards 10 percent more companies have published guidelines for the welfare of farm animals.

Global animal welfare

The organization is campaigning for a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare. In 2013 the organization lobbyed the United Nations to include animal welfare in two General Assembly resolutions on agriculture and disaster risk reduction.
