Waar ( Wār ; [ ʋɑːr ], translated from English "to attack") is a 2013 Pakistani action thriller directed by Bilal Lashari . The script was written by Hassan Rana . Alongside Shaan Shahid , Meesha Shafi , Ali Azmat , Shamoon Abbasi and Ayesha Khan , Suhaib Rana and Kamran Lashari also star in the film. The film grossed the second highest grossing of any Pakistani film after Jawani Phir Nahi Ani . The film is a stylized representation of the events surrounding the war on terror in Pakistan, such as the attack on a police school in Lahore in 2009.

action

Major Mujtaba Rizvi is a former officer in the Pakistani Army who retired early. The plot includes an anti-terrorism operation in the northwest of the tribal areas of Pakistan , led by Ethesham Khattak and coordinated by his sister, Javeria Khattak, an intelligence officer. Ehtesham and Javeria learn of a major terrorist attack, which can only be countered with the help of Major Mujtaba.

The family of Major Mujtabas was murdered by Ramal, an agent of the Indian espionage agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), which is why he wants to take revenge on Ramal. Because he knows Ramal's tactics and procedures, he can successfully counteract his attacks.

Mulla Siraj, a Taliban who works for Ramal from a fortress in the tribal areas, hands him two bombs which he wants to plant somewhere in Pakistan and detonate them. A terrorist attack on a police school planned by the RAW spy Laxmi is meant to distract the security authorities. One of the bombs set by Ramal is in a vehicle and detonates when it is being transported, killing Ehtesham. The second bomb was planted at the Jinnah Convention Center in Islamabad, but Major Mujtaba managed to prevent the attack and thus protect the country from another deadly terrorist attack. He gets his revenge by killing Ramal at the end of the film.

production

The title Waar comes from Urdu and literally means "to attack". The film is primarily in English, with a few short dialogues in Urdu. Producer Hassan Waqas Rana wanted to dub the film in Urdu but abandoned that plan as it would have affected Shaan Shahid's role. The plot was inspired by real events and shows aspects of terrorism in Pakistan. The story was written by Hassan Waqas Rana.

Casting and casting

Initially, the stunt director Tom Delmar, known from Hollywood films, wanted to direct the film, but later Bilal Lashari was chosen as the director. Lashari had worked with Rana on other projects. Waar was the first film directed by Lashari. He has directed music videos and assisted Shoaib Mansoor for the film Khuda Kay Liye . Ali Azmat and Meesha Shafi , known for their singing, made their debut as actors in the film. Both roles were only planned as guest appearances, but were later expanded to include major roles. Hamza Ali Abbasi , who was planned as an assistant director, got a role as an actor.

Filming

The film was produced by MindWorks Media and contains 400 visual effects . Filming to complete Waar took 3 years. The film was shot in Karachi ( Pakistan ), Rome ( Italy ), Istanbul ( Turkey ), Lahore (Pakistan), Islamabad and Swat . The media reported cooperation with Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistani Army, but Lashari denies this on the grounds that MindWorks Media worked with ISPR on a documentary while Waar was filmed.

The budget for the film is estimated between 170 million and 200 million Pakistani rupees.

Publication and Promotion

After changing the release date several times, the film was finally released on October 16, 2013, during the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice in Pakistan. The originally planned release date was September 6, 2013.

The first trailer for the film was released in January 2012, the second in January 2013. In the same month, the trailer was viewed over 500,000 times, making it one of the top 5 videos on YouTube . The film has been named as the most anticipated film in the history of Pakistani cinema. But due to the long wait between the trailers and the actual release date, the mood among the critics was bad. Shamoon Abbasi , one of the cast, justified the delay with the lack of resources.

Waar had its premiere on October 10, 2013 in Karachi and on October 14, 2013 in Rawalpindi / Islamabad . The censorship office in Sindh only released the film for adults due to the depiction of violence and obscene text passages. Waar has been shown in around 45 cinemas in Pakistan and premiered on TV on August 14, 2014 on ARY Digital .

Originally Warner Bros. should have distributed the film according to reports, but this was taken over by ARY Films and Madviwalla Entertainment.

The film was released in 25 countries. The film was released in the United Arab Emirates on December 12th, where the actors of the film also graced the red carpet of the Grand Cinema in Wafi City . The film premiered in the UK on January 17, 2014, followed by Australia on May 15, 2014.

reception

Reviews

The film was largely received positively by the critics. At IMDb , the film scores 8.2 out of 10 possible points and is in 249th place among the best-rated IMDb films with over 28,000 votes (as of May 2017).

Rafay Mahmood from The Express Tribune rated Waar 3 out of 5 stars and praised the cinematography, editing and audio design, but criticized the story and the actors negatively. He describes the film as "pointless propaganda ... which is damaging to the mind", but also as "... good feature film for Pakistani cinema".

Dawn's Mohammad Kamran Jawaid also gave Waar bad reviews. He called the script "... cobbled together to create a coherent narrative". He also criticized the film for being in English instead of Urdu.

Because of the plot, people in India are very critical of Waar. In contrast to other Pakistani films or Indian films that were released at the same time, the film had a high media presence in India. Waar also enjoyed a good reputation internationally, which is why he was criticized by politicians and the Indian media.

But there was also positive criticism from India: The Indian film director Ram Gopal Varma praised the work of Bilal Lashari and was amazed by the film "Amazed Beyond Faith".

After 36 match days, Choorian's record was finally broken.
