Wacław Borowski (born August 6, 1885 in Łódź , Russian Empire ; died April 9, 1954 Łódź) was a Polish painter, graphic artist and set designer. He was one of the leading Polish artists of the neo-classical period in Poland in the 1920s and 1930s.

Life

Borowski studied painting from 1905 to 1909 at the Art Academy in Cracow in the Austro-Hungarian part of Poland under Józef Mehoffer and art history at the Jagiellonian University . From 1909 to 1913 he lived in Paris , where he mainly copied the old masters in the Louvre . During his time in Paris, Borowski designed covers and illustrations for the magazine "Museion", which propagated the rebirth of classical music. from 1914 to 1919 he lived in Switzerland. In between he traveled to Italy to study the works of the masters of the Renaissance in their living environment at the time. In 1920 Borowski volunteered in the Polish-Soviet War . In 1922 he was one of the founders of the Warsaw artist group "Rytm" (Polish: "Stowarzyszenie Artystów Polskich Rytm"), in which he was active until 1932 - for many years as its president. In 1926 he joined the Association of Fine Arts “RYT” (Polish: “Stowarzyszenia Artystów Grafików RYT”), and since 1932 he was a member of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Between 1927 and 1933 he taught at the Warsaw Institute for Plastic Art . In 1932 he took part in the art competitions of the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles with a contribution .

His aesthetic of the new classicism was based on the principles of the Renaissance, but also on his time in Paris, in which André Derain and Henri Matisse in particular had influenced him. He had a close friendship with Eugeniusz Zak ; together they developed a style of expression with an idyllic and lyrical mood, in which this expression of the Italian Quattrocento was exaggerated. In addition to easel paintings , Borowski also created significant monumental paintings . In 1925 the wall painting was created in the Thursday dinner room in the Warsaw Royal Castle , along with many others, an important one in the Cafe “Mała Ziemiańska” in Mazowiecka Street in Warsaw (1927).

Borowski was also successful as a set designer, especially for the Teatr Polski in Warsaw he created many sets. He was also involved in the design of banknotes for the Polish banknote printing plant .
