Waiting for Herb is the sixth album by British folk punk band The Pogues . It reached number twentieth on the UK album charts.

history

Waiting for Herb was the band's first album recorded without former singer Shane MacGowan . For this and the following album the Tin Whistle player Peter “Spider” Stacy took over the vocal part. He replaced the former The Clash singer Joe Strummer , who, after MacGowan left the band, became the band's lead singer for several concerts.

Since MacGowan, the most important songwriter in the band, had also been lost, this task was taken over by the other band members, e. B. from the banjo player Jem Finer , who was already the second most important songwriter. James Fearnley , Andrew Ranken and Darryl Hunt also wrote part of the song material. Fearnley debuted Sitting on the Top of the World and Drunken Boat (which was featured in an earlier version called Moving to Moldova on the 2008 box set Just Look Them Straight in the Eye and Say ... POGUE MAHONE! ) as a songwriter for the Pogues.

Andrew Ranken first appeared as the lead singer on My Baby's Gone , the song is dedicated to Deborah Korner, Ranken's wife , who died prior to the Waiting for Herb recording sessions . At the band 's concerts, My Baby's Gone was sung by Stacy instead of Ranken.

With Waiting for Herb the influences of Irish folk disappeared further and further, it is the second album (after Peace and Love ) without a single traditional composition. The album includes the song Tuesday Morning , which became the Pogues' first top 20 hit since Fairytale of New York . He reached eighteenth place in the UK singles chart. The second single from the album, Once Upon a Time , reached number 66.

Quoted from the Allmusic Guide:

"Without Shane MacGowan, the Pogues are a competent Irish folk-rock band with several strong songs, yet they lack the fire of their earlier albums. For the diehard, Waiting for Herb will be necessary, even if it is a little disheartening."

"Without Shane MacGowan, the Pogues are a competent Irish folk rock band, with some strong songs, but lack the fire of their previous albums. For die-hard fans, Waiting for Herb will be necessary, although it seems a bit daunting."
