history

Forest house in winter

In 1831 the forest house in the Steinwald Nature Park was built as a forest caretaker's house. The reason for this was the arduous walk that the forest guards had to undertake to check the forests. The forest rangers were quartered with their families in the wooden house in the Sulzschlag department. A well was dug and the residents began to practice modest agriculture. In 1837, the forest warden Baptist Zimmerer set up a restaurant as a sideline despite the confined space. The small Waldhaus restaurant was also run in the following years.

Another service hut was built in 1854 and a horse stable was built in 1882. Because of the increasingly poor substance of the original wooden house, today's forest house was built in solid construction in 1898. In the 1930s, agriculture and catering hardly produced any income. In addition, the forest house became increasingly less important, as the foresters could easily reach their area by car. In 1959 the last resident left the house.

In 1997, the Waldhaus moved back into the public eye. It was used as a location for the filming of Krambambuli , a novella by Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach . Christine Neubauer , Tobias Moretti and Gabriel Barylli, among others, took part in the production under the direction of Xaver Schwarzenberger .

In 2012, a project by the Steinwald Alliance began to convert the building into an information center with a small restaurant. This idea found support both from the owner, the Bavarian State Forests, and from the Steinwald Nature Park. The construction work was entrusted to the city of Erbendorf by the Steinwald Alliance. The construction was monitored in compliance with the requirements of nature conservation . A private well and a small sewage treatment plant with the highest level of purification and state-of-the-art technology were built. The building itself was completely renovated. A small restaurant with a kitchen was built on the ground floor. Information points of the Bavarian State Forests as well as the Geopark Bavaria-Böhmen and the Steinwald e. V. established. The total costs of the measure amounted to around 750,000 euros, which were funded by the regional economic development program 2012 and the European Union with the ERDF regional competitiveness and employment program. The city of Erbendorf took over the remaining amount .
