The three-leaved Waldsteinia ( Waldsteinia ternata ) is a type of plant from the genus Waldsteinia ( Waldsteinia ) in the subfamily of the Rosoideae .

description

The three-leaved Waldsteinia is an evergreen, perennial , runners-forming rhizome shrub that reaches heights of 10 to 15 centimeters. The leaves are threefold. The flower stalks have a few inconspicuous, linear-lanceolate and undivided bracts that have up to 3 teeth. Outer sepals are present. The petals have no auricle-like appendages and are not nailed short. The fruit stalks are hairy short.

Flowering time is from April to May.

Systematics

One can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Waldsteinia ternata subsp. ternata : The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42.
  • Waldsteinia ternata subsp. trifolia (Rochel ex WDJ Koch) Teppner : The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
  • Waldsteinia ternata subsp. maximowicziana Teppner : The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Occurrence

Waldsteinia ternata subsp. trifolia (Rochel ex WDJ Koch) Teppner occurs in the Eastern Alps in Carinthia and Slovenia , in Croatia and Romania in semi-shady grasslands, bushes and forest fringes, valley slopes of gorges and places that are fresh and humid. Waldsteinia ternata subsp. ternata can be found in the area of Lake Baikal and Waldsteinia ternata subsp. maximowicziana Teppner in the Far East as well as in central and northern Japan .

use

The three-leaved Waldsteinie is widely used as an ornamental plant for groups of trees, borders and graves. It has been in culture since 1803 at the latest. The variety 'Kronstadt' is large-flowered, 'Variegata' has variegated leaves. The plants in culture mostly go to Waldsteinia ternata subsp. trifolia back.
